The FroGames Card
You have two tiles in front, your opponent looks at two others. Someone takes the long river, someone the perfect mountain. Then you build in silence, each creating their own valley. In the end, you compare scores. No one remembers who won, but everyone remembers that lake closed at the last minute.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
The countryside duel of the 2023 Spiel des Jahres game, in a pocket-sized version
Michael Palm and Lukas Zach have transformed the cooperative Dorfromantik (Spiel des Jahres 2023) into a head-to-head game for two. Illustrated by Paul Riebe, the game maintains the pastoral aesthetic of the original video game by Toukana Interactive but completely changes the dynamic: instead of collaborating, players compete to build the most harmonious valley. The format is pocket-sized, the duration reduced, the experience designed to take Dorfromantik anywhere.
The game is divided into two distinct phases: first drafting, then building. In the selection phase, players take turns choosing the tiles (hexagonal landscape or objective cards) they will use. In the placement phase, they build their own maps in parallel, revealing one tile at a time and placing it. Points are awarded for completed objectives (forests, villages, fields), for the longest river, for flags in closed areas and, new to this edition, for complete mountains and lakes. The winner is the one who planned best during the draft and optimized best during placement.
What they say abroad
"Designed specifically for two players, brings the familiar peaceful landscape-building into a quick, friendly head-to-head competition."
Designed specifically for two players, it brings the familiar peaceful landscape-building into a quick, friendly head-to-head competition.
— Toukana Interactive
This is the first Dorfromantik designed for a duel. The drafting adds a tension that the cooperative version does not have. We will see at the table if the formula holds up: the idea is solid, the execution will need to be tested. We will update the card with feedback from the first games.

Dorfromantik - Head to Head (Dorfromantik: Kopf an Kopf)
What you find in the box
Tiles, objectives, and tokens to build two valleys
Hexagonal tiles
Landscape tiles with forests, fields, rivers, tracks, villages. Like the base Dorfromantik, but with new mountains and lakes that reward complete closure.
Objective cards
Tasks to complete during building: X connected forest squares, X adjacent villages, river at least X long. Those who choose well in the draft start with an advantage.
Flag tokens
Go on closed areas and are worth bonus points. In the draft, you have to figure out whether to aim for many small areas or a few large ones.
Pocket-sized format
Compact box designed for travel. Reduced components but sufficient for quick games anywhere.

How to play
The game flow
Two distinct phases: first choose, then build.
Landscape tiles and objective cards are revealed. In turn, each player chooses one and puts it in their personal pile. They alternate until the available tiles run out. Whoever drafts better has already won half the game.
Simultaneously, players reveal the first tile from their pile and place it on their map. This continues one at a time until the pile is empty. Each tile must be placed adjacent to an already existing one.
During placement, objectives are completed (total forest fields, total connected villages), areas with flags are closed (bonus points), and entire mountains and lakes are built (new scoring mechanism).
Pile empty, count: completed objectives, flags in closed areas, longest river, complete mountains and lakes. The player with the most points wins. Minimal differences are the norm.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Silent Draft
The first tiles are on the table. Look, evaluate, choose in turn. Someone takes the long river, someone else the objective card worth 8 points. No one knows yet what they will draw next. The tension is all here.
Building in parallel
Phase two: reveal and place. Each player flips a tile from their pile and places it on their map. Silence, a few glances at the other's valley, mental calculations. The rhythm is fast and autonomous.
The lake takes shape
Mid-game. One player is closing a perfect lake in six spaces, the other has focused on three separate rivers. The draft choices are starting to produce visible results. Someone laughs, someone counts spaces.
The last tile
Pile almost finished. Only one tile left for each player. One needs a field to close the objective, the other a mountain. The die is cast: flip, place, check. Something closes, something remains open.
Final scoring
Completed objectives, flags in closed areas, bonus mountains and lakes, longest river. Points are counted in silence. The difference is 4 points. Someone says 'rematch', someone packs up the box.

The draft decides everything
If you've never played a drafting game, the learning curve is steep in the first 5 minutes. You need to understand which tiles you need AND which ones to deny your opponent. Someone who chooses randomly loses by 20 points. The second game is already better.
Zero direct interaction
You don't sabotage the other's map, you don't steal their tiles during placement. Interaction is only in the draft. If you're looking for direct conflict or take-that, this isn't the right game. It's a parallel puzzle with contextual setup.
Minimum content for a pocket-sized format
The box is small, the components are reduced to what's essential. Don't expect the unlock campaign of the base Dorfromantik: here it's a quick, repeatable duel, but without progression or sealed boxes. Buy it if you're looking for portability and quick games, not if you want a legacy system.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
Highest score after final counting.
Victory
- Completed objectives: task cards that requested N tiles of a type (forest, field, village) are worth the stated points.
- Flags in closed areas: each completely surrounded area with a flag gives a bonus proportional to its size.
- Longest river + complete mountains and lakes: new to this edition, they reward those who plan closures of aquatic and mountainous terrain.
Defeat
- Wrong draft: you took tiles that don't fit your objectives, or you left key pieces to your opponent.
- Inefficient placement: you opened too many areas without closing them, or built short rivers instead of one long, continuous river.
- No planning: you played reactively without anticipating what you would draw from your pile.
Dorfromantik Head to Head promises 15-minute games that reward those who think two moves ahead. The draft is the heart, placement is the consequence. Perfect for those who want Dorfromantik in their pocket and in duel mode.

FAQ about Dorfromantik - Head to Head (Dorfromantik: Kopf an Kopf)
Is it an expansion of the base Dorfromantik or a standalone game?
Standalone game. You don't need to own the cooperative Dorfromantik. The rules are different (draft + competitive vs. pure cooperative) and the components do not mix. It is designed as a parallel experience, not an expansion.
Are the games really that fast?
Yes, if both players know the rules. The draft takes 5 minutes, parallel placement another 10-15. Total 15-25 actual minutes. The box says 15-30 and that's credible. Minimal setup time.
How much does luck count in the draft?
Little. The revealed tiles are visible to both players and are chosen in turn. Luck lies in the sequence of revelation, but an attentive player knows how to adapt. Placement is then deterministic: you know what you have in your pile.
What mechanics does Dorfromantik Head to Head use?
Open drafting (alternating selection from a common pool), tile placement on a hexagonal grid, parallel optimization (build your map without directly influencing your opponent's), set collection for objectives.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The text is minimal (only on objective cards and rulebook), the icons on the tiles are universal. Good readability even for those with basic English.
