The FroGames Card
You place a lynx, create a corridor, complete a habitat. The other player smiles and places an owl. You have no idea if they are winning or you are.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Nature-themed strategy with hidden objectives
Upland & Prairie is the new game by Peer Sylvester for Osprey Games, set to release in September 2026. The theme is rewilding: the return of animal species to their native habitats. Eurasian lynx, burrowing owls, black-footed ferrets return to the Scottish Highlands and the Montana prairies. Illustrations by Hannah Cohen.
On your turn, you place an animal tile on a shared hexagonal grid, create connections between habitats, and re-populate ecosystems. But you have a secret objective: one of the species is worth more points to you. You must balance: which animals you release into the landscape and which you keep in hand, because every choice informs opponents about what you are truly aiming for.
What they say abroad
"Race to rewild the land in this quick and charming strategy game."
— Osprey Games
The game has just been released, and the board promises two truly distinct ecosystems. We are testing it: the card will return with the full verdict after the first few games.

What you put into play
The rewilding tiles
Eurasian Lynx
Apex predator of the Highlands. Placing it creates corridors between forests. If it's your secret species, each lynx is worth double at the end of the game.
Burrowing Owl
Nocturnal raptor of the Montana prairies. Lives in abandoned burrows. Connecting multiple owls in the same habitat unlocks bonus points.
Black-footed Ferret
Small mustelid of the shortgrass prairie. Requires specific habitats. Releasing it reveals information about your intentions: others will understand what you are protecting.
Two biome boards
Green Scotland and windy Montana, each with a distinct set of species. At the start of the game, you choose which ecosystem to re-populate: it changes everything.

How to play
The flow of each turn
Each player has a very quick turn: place, connect, deduce.
Choose a tile from your hand and place it on the shared hexagonal grid, respecting habitat rules (forests, grasslands, rocky areas).
If the tile connects to others of the same type or creates a valid corridor, you earn immediate points visible to everyone. Others take note.
You can draw a new tile from the common deck or keep your hand as it is. Holding tiles is a signal: you are waiting for the right moment.
Others observe what you have placed, what you have held, which habitats you are building. Each move updates their hypotheses about your secret species.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Biome choice and secret objectives
Decide together: Scotland or Montana. Then secretly draw your species card: it will be your obsession for the next twenty minutes. Look at the empty board and start imagining where to place the first tile.
The first revealing placements
You place the first animal tile. The other player places one nearby. Every choice is a clue: are they building corridors for owls? Are they accumulating lynx? You start to deduce, but it's still foggy.
The grid fills up
The board now has connected habitats, intertwining animal routes. Someone completes a long corridor and scores points. Someone else holds tiles in hand: what are they hiding?
The moment of truth
Two or three turns left. You finally understand which species the opponent is protecting. You try to block their last corridor, but they have a hidden tile that overturns the plan.
Counting and discovery
Objective cards are revealed. The one who sampled ferrets wins by two points. The one who focused on lynx discovers they helped the other without realizing it. Laughter, immediate revenge: reshuffle and play again.
🐸What to know beforehandThree honest things, from a friend▼
What to know beforehand
Three things to consider
Luck in drawing
You draw tiles from a common deck. If your species don't appear immediately, you might find yourself in difficulty. The initial hand significantly influences the game: there's some luck involved.
Limited depth
The game is fast and accessible, but don't expect complex strategic layers. If you're looking for an intricate eurogame, this is too compact. It's a gateway, not a heavy one.
Scaling with 3-4 players
Great with two. With three or four, the grid fills up faster and control decreases: more chaos, less planning. Evaluate whether you prefer the duel or the chaos.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the end rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
The game ends when the grid is full or the deck runs out. Then counting and revelation.
Victory
- Points for each tile of your secret species placed on the grid
- Bonus points for completed corridors and connected habitats
- Hidden points from objective cards revealed at the end of the game
How you lose points
- Tiles held in hand at the end of the game are worthless
- Isolated placements without connections lose bonuses
- Revealing your species too early allows others to block you
In twenty minutes you've built an ecosystem, bluffed about your intentions, and discovered who was playing the parallel game. Available on FroGames.it

FAQ about Upland & Prairie
What mechanics does Upland & Prairie use?
Tile placement on a hexagonal grid, hidden victory points (secret species objectives), connections between habitats, variable setup (two distinct biomes). Fast-paced structure with elements of bluffing and deduction.
Does it work well with two players?
Yes, in fact: with two players, control over the grid is maximal and the deduction of the opponent's objective is more tense. With three or four, chaos increases and planning decreases. The core of the game is the duel.
How long does a game really last?
The stated 15-25 minutes are realistic. The first game with an explanation will take up to 30, then it settles around 20. Very quick setup, fast turns, no downtime: it's a true strategic filler.
Are the two biomes really different or is it just graphics?
Each biome has a distinct set of species and a different habitat distribution on the grid. They are not cosmetic variations: Scotland and Montana play slightly differently. Replayability also comes from here.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The game has minimal language dependency (objective cards and rulebook), but components and texts are in English. No Italian translation announced at the moment.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
