You position your units behind cover. You control the firing lines. You hope the Sectoid doesn't use psionics. Then you roll the dice and someone ends up in the infirmary for three missions.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The War for Earth Comes to the Tabletop
XCOM: The Miniatures Game brings the tactical universe of XCOM Enemy Unknown (Firaxis Games) to the tabletop through a miniatures wargame designed by Ivan Sorensen for Modiphius Entertainment. The game system is based on the successful Five Parsecs From Home, adapted to the setting of the alien threat and the Earth defense organized by XCOM.
Manage a team of elite operatives through procedural missions against increasingly powerful alien forces. Between combat, expand the XCOM base, research captured alien technologies, treat the wounded, and recruit new soldiers. The 180-page rulebook includes both solo and cooperative modes, as well as a PvP variant where one player controls the invaders.

This is a first read-through. The game is set to be released in Autumn 2026, and available information is still limited. The sheet will be updated as soon as we have played the first games and gathered more data from the community.

XCOM: The Miniatures Game
The game is explicitly designed for solo play, with an AI system for aliens and procedural mission generation. Based on Five Parsecs From Home, already recognized as an excellent solo experience. The cooperative mode adds a second player without overhauling the structure.
What's in play
The elements in play
XCOM Team
Create your roster of customizable operatives. Each soldier has a background, class, equipment, and can level up or permanently die between missions.
Alien Threat
Over 50 types of procedural enemies: from psionic Sectoids to armored Mutons, from Chryssalids to Ethereals. The campaign scales difficulty with new species each month.
XCOM Base
Expand headquarters with functional modules. Research captured alien technologies to unlock advanced weapons, enhanced armor, and MEC Troopers.
Five Parsecs Engine
Fast tactical combat with cover, line of sight, and special abilities. Missions generated with variable objectives, environmental complications, and recurring rivals.

How to play
The flow of a tactical mission
Each encounter follows a quick structure: deployment, initiative, actions, resolution.
You generate the mission (objective, enemies, complications) with procedural tables. You place terrain and miniatures according to deployment rules.
You roll for initiative, activate units in order. Each model can move and shoot (or special action). Alien AI follows simple flowcharts based on position and threat.
You roll to hit considering cover and distance. Wounded models are out of play, dead ones are definitive. You use class abilities and consumable items to handle unforeseen events.
You gain experience, loot, and Council morale. You manage wounded, research, training, and preparation for the next mission. The campaign continues as long as you resist or win.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Mission Briefing
You consult the rulebook, roll on the procedural tables. An objective emerges: recover a VIP, eliminate a Sectoid command, investigate an unknown signal. You choose which soldiers to send and what equipment to bring.
Contact
Your miniatures advance under cover. Aliens appear according to the rulebook's AI. The first exchange of fire decides who controls the ground. One soldier goes into full cover, another moves to flank.
Complication
A Sectoid uses Mind Control. A Chryssalid jumps out of the fog of war. Plan A goes awry. You burn a disposable item, reposition the squad, hope for the save throw. The tension rises.
Objective completed
You recover the alien object or eliminate the last enemy. But someone is gravely wounded, perhaps dead. You collect the loot and count the damage. Victory has a price.
Return to base
In the management phase, you treat the wounded (out for 2-3 missions), research recovered technology, upgrade equipment. You prepare for the next mission. The cycle restarts, more difficult.

Good to know beforehand
Three things to keep in mind
It's not a board game: you need to acquire miniatures, scenarios, and dice. Modiphius offers an official line in resin and HIPS plastic, but the system is agnostic (you can use proxies). Significant initial budget if you start from scratch.
180 pages cover combat, campaign, base management, and research. Five Parsecs is celebrated for its clarity, but requires initial study. The first few games will be slow until you internalize the flowcharts.
Soldiers can die permanently or remain wounded for multiple missions. This is the thematic core of XCOM but can be frustrating: that freshly promoted recruit can disappear with one unlucky roll. It's not a forgiving game.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
Victory and defeat in the campaign
The campaign progresses as long as XCOM resists or the invasion is stopped.
Victory
- You complete the campaign's narrative sequence (presumably final confrontation with the Ethereals or Temple mission)
- You maintain Council morale above the critical threshold throughout the war
- You research and implement key technologies to overthrow the alien threat
Defeat
- Council morale collapses and funding is withdrawn (XCOM is disbanded)
- Your entire squad dies and you have no resources to recruit replacements
- You fail a critical mission required by the campaign's narrative
It's a narrative wargame that promises the permanent tension of XCOM in analog form. The launch is scheduled for November 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about XCOM: The Miniatures Game
Is it a complete board game or just the rulebook?
The Core Rulebook is a 180-page manual (available for pre-order with immediate PDF). Miniatures, scenarios, dice, and accessories are sold separately. Modiphius offers an official line but the rulebook is agnostic: you can use miniatures you already own.
Do I need to know the XCOM video game to play?
No. The game is self-sufficient and the rulebook explains the setting and mechanics. Knowing the video game enriches the experience (you recognize iconic aliens, technologies, situations) but it is not necessary to understand how to play.
How does solo play work?
The game is designed for solo play, with an AI system for the aliens and procedural mission generation via tables. It is based on the Five Parsecs From Home engine, already recognized as excellent for solo play. You can add a second player in cooperative mode or have them control the aliens in PvP.
What mechanics does XCOM: The Miniatures Game use?
Combat with variable measurements (measurement movement) using D6 and D10 dice, cover system and lines of sight. Procedural scenario generation via tables. Resource management and technology research between missions. Progression system with permanent death and injuries lasting multiple games.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. The rulebook is substantial (180 pages) and requires good proficiency in the language. Currently, no official Italian localizations have been announced.
