The FroGames Card
Your single is ready. Now you have to get it on the radio: an interview here, a recommendation there, a few dollars to the right manager. By the end of the week, you're either on the Hit List or already working on your next track.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Your songs finally take center stage
Ear Candy is the first expansion for Rock Hard: 1977, the game designed by Jackie Fox (bassist for The Runaways in the 70s) and illustrated by Jennifer Giner. Jackie Fox brought her firsthand experience of the 70s music industry to a game that had already captivated Gen Con 2024, and now the expansion enriches that formula with a new path to fame.
Ear Candy allows you to use Life Experience to write 45-rpm singles in various musical styles, promote them on the radio, and climb the Hit List charts, turning songs into an alternative way to accumulate Fame. The expansion includes two new characters, two new managers, two new types of Candy, and additional cards for every deck in the base game, making each game even more varied and unpredictable.

How to Play
The flow of a round with the expansion
Ear Candy integrates into the base game's flow: new songwriting and promotion actions alternate with classic concert and relationship mechanics.
You place workers in day locations. Now you can write singles using Life Experiences, choosing the musical style that will influence subsequent promotion.
Night actions include concerts and radio promotion. Spend resources to move your singles up the Hit List, competing for chart positions.
You frequent clubs, meet managers (now there are eight in play) and accumulate Life Experience. New types of Candy offer more control over bonus actions.
At the end of the round, those with singles on the Hit List earn Fame. Then draw an Event card: the new cards from the expansion change the dynamics of the next game.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table with Ear Candy
Not the rules. The experience.
Expanded Setup
Choose one of the two new characters or one of the classics. There are now eight managers on the table instead of six, and the new objective cards shuffled into the base game decks create unprecedented combinations. The game starts with more options than ever.
The first Life Experience becomes a single
You use a Life Experience card to write your first 45 RPM single. The musical style you choose determines which radio stations will play it. You begin to understand that the Hit List is a parallel path, not a distraction.
Competition for promotion
Everyone wants to get their singles on the radio. Promotion actions become competitive hotspots, and whoever moves first has a clear advantage. Someone starts climbing the charts while you're still halfway there.
A single enters the Hit List
Your single crosses the threshold and enters the Hit List. You gain immediate Fame and unlock bonuses that strengthen your next moves. Someone at the table gives you a dirty look: now you're a threat.
End of game: who climbed best
The final count includes Fame from the base game plus points from the Hit List. Those who diversified their strategies between concerts, relationships, and successful singles usually win. The new managers and characters have changed the balance.

Before you buy
Three things to consider
Ear Candy is not standalone: you need a copy of Rock Hard: 1977 to play. The expansion integrates completely but does not replace any base game elements, so you must have both boxes.
The songwriting and Hit List system adds a new strategic layer. Those familiar with the base game will learn it quickly, but for new players it might be better to play a game with only the base game before integrating the expansion.
The game was released in August 2026 and has very few ratings on BGG. We don't yet know if all combinations of new cards and characters are perfectly balanced: expect some post-launch discoveries from the community.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Ear Candy adds a parallel path to victory: now it's not just about the fame accumulated from the base game, but also about the fame earned through singles and the Hit List.
Victory
- You accumulate more Fame than anyone else by combining concerts, relationships, base game objectives, and Hit List positions
- You manage to get more singles into the Hit List and keep them in high positions for more rounds
- You leverage new characters and managers to create synergies that others haven't seen
Defeat
- You focus only on singles or only on the base game, without diversifying your sources of fame
- Others beat you on radio promotion and monopolize Hit List positions
- You don't adapt your strategy to the new managers and characters, sticking to base game tactics only
Ear Candy is not a cosmetic addition: it doubles the paths to fame and forces you to think in parallel. The winner is the one who manages to keep one foot in both worlds, that of concerts and that of the radio charts.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Rock Hard 1977: Ear Candy
Can I play Ear Candy without the base game?
No. Ear Candy requires a copy of Rock Hard: 1977 to be played. The expansion adds cards, characters, and mechanics but does not include the fundamental components (game board, fame tokens, base cards) necessary for a complete game.
How complex is the integration with the base game?
If you know Rock Hard: 1977, you will learn the new rules in 10 minutes. The songwriting and Hit List system integrates into the existing phases without disrupting the flow. For new players, we suggest playing a game with only the base game before adding the expansion, to avoid overwhelming the first sessions.
Do the new characters and managers change the balance much?
Yes, but we don't know how much yet. The expansion has just been released and has few ratings on BoardGameGeek, so there is not yet solid data on balance. The asymmetric abilities of the new characters and the eight total managers promise high variety, but dominant combinations may emerge in the coming months.
What mechanics does Rock Hard 1977: Ear Candy use?
The expansion maintains the base game's worker placement and adds hand management mechanics for songwriting, push-your-luck in radio promotion, and track progression on the Hit List. All within a round structure with three phases (Day, Night, Evening) typical of the original game.
Is it available in Italian?
No. The edition sold on FroGames is in English. The cards contain text (action names, effects, objectives), so knowledge of English is necessary to play. At the moment there are no official or verified fan-made Italian translations.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
