FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Someone distributes resources, someone rushes to rescue a lost Smurf, someone yells that Gargamel is too close. And in the end, you win or lose together.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Rebuilding a mushroom village before Gargamel destroys it again
The Smurfs: Hidden Village is born from the collaboration of Antoine Bauza (7 Wonders), Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc (Cash 'n Guns) and Théo Rivière, with original illustrations by Peyo, the creator of The Smurfs. The game takes modern worker placement mechanics and brings them into the most famous blue comic book universe, building a cooperative experience designed for families but with real tactical choices.
Each player controls a Smurf with unique abilities. Together you must collect resources, build mushroom houses, complete inventions, and find lost Smurfs in the forest, while Gargamel and Azrael advance towards the village. Actions are limited, time is running out, and every turn someone has to decide whether to risk it or play it safe. When the last house is built, you win. If Gargamel arrives first, you lose everything.

The Smurfs: Hidden Village
The game supports solo play with official rules: you control multiple Smurfs and manage everything yourself, with Gargamel advancing as in multiplayer. The experience works, but it loses the cooperative discussion that is the heart of the game. It becomes an optimization puzzle, not a group evening.
The pieces of the village
What you'll find in the box
Mushroom houses
Every rebuilt house is a step towards victory. Several are needed, and each costs specific resources. The problem is that Gargamel doesn't wait.
Smurf cards
Each Smurf has a unique power: Papa Smurf coordinates, Smurfette inspires, Hefty carries double resources. Who you play and when makes a difference.
Inventions
Four Smurfs build an invention that unlocks permanent abilities for the team. It takes resources and time, but it can turn the game around.
Gargamel and Azrael
They advance every turn. When they reach the village, you've lost. Their presence sets the pace: every wasted action is a step you give them.
At the end of the game, someone will say: 'If only we had built that house sooner...'. It always happens. It's a team game where mistakes are only seen afterwards.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The village is empty
The game starts with the board almost empty and a list of houses to rebuild. Each player chooses a Smurf and reads their special power. Someone says: let's do a practice round. Nobody ever does a practice round; you start right away.
The first resources
The first few turns seem quiet. You place your worker, collect wood or stone, someone goes looking for lost Smurfs. Then Gargamel advances one space and someone says: wait, how much time do we have? The tension immediately rises.
The invention you need
Mid-game, you realize that a specific invention would save your life: one that gives extra resources, or one that slows Gargamel down. The problem is it requires four coordinated actions to complete. Someone has to sacrifice for the common good.
Gargamel is near
Last three turns. The village is almost complete, but Gargamel is two spaces from the edge. Every action must be perfect. Someone proposes a risky plan, someone else says it's too dangerous. In the end, you vote, as in any self-respecting cooperative game.
The last house
Either you build the last house and win, or Gargamel arrives and you lose everything. There are no half-measures. When it ends, half the table yells, the other half slumps in their chairs. Then someone says: another round?
How to play
The flow of each round
Each round is divided into precise phases: worker placement, action resolution, threat advancement, and victory check. Everything flows quickly.
In turn, each player places their Smurf on an available action space: collecting resources, building a house, completing an invention, or rescuing a lost Smurf. Spaces are limited; first come, first served.
Each Smurf performs the action where it is placed. Some powers are activated here: Hefty takes double resources, Papa Smurf makes another Smurf act, Smurfette gives bonuses to the team. Synergies are important.
At the end of the round, Gargamel and Azrael advance one or more spaces towards the village. If they arrive before all houses are built, you lose. There are no second chances.
If all mushroom houses have been built before Gargamel arrives, you win immediately. Otherwise, a new round begins. The game lasts until you win or lose.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
Truly asymmetrical powers
Each Smurf has an ability that changes how you play. Hefty doubles resources, Smurfette inspires the team, Brainy unlocks extra actions. These aren't cosmetic variants: you have to build your strategy around the available powers.
Cooperative inventions
Inventions require four Smurfs to collaborate to complete them. Once active, they give permanent advantages to the entire team: more resources, extra movements, slowing down Gargamel. They are costly but decisive.
A clock that really ticks
Gargamel advances every turn, without exception. It's not an abstract timer: it's a pawn on the board inexorably approaching. When he arrives, it's over. The time pressure is constant and concrete.
Accessible worker placement
The game uses classic worker placement, but simplified: few spaces, clear actions, no complex production chains. It's perfect for those who have never played a cooperative euro game but want to try.
Clear and visible objective
You must build all the mushroom houses before Gargamel arrives. That's it. There are no hidden objectives, secret missions, or ambiguous conditions. Everyone sees how close they are to victory or defeat.
Integrated deck building
During the game, you improve the common deck by adding stronger cards. It's not the focus of the game, but it creates a progression curve: early actions are weak, later ones are powerful. If you survive long enough, of course.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The Smurfs: Hidden Village has symmetrical and immediate win and loss conditions. There are no points or complex metrics.
Victory
- You built all the required mushroom houses before Gargamel arrived at the village
- Every completed house brings you closer to victory, and the last built house ends the game immediately
- Victory is collective: you all win, or you all lose
Defeat
- Gargamel and Azrael reach the village before all houses are built
- There are no ways to slow them down enough if you wasted too many turns at the beginning
- Losing means starting from scratch: the village remains empty and Gargamel has won
The Smurfs: Hidden Village is a cooperative family game that respects players' intelligence. Choices matter, the theme works, and its 30-minute duration makes it perfect for repeated plays. It's not as deep as Pandemic, but it's more accessible and less punishing.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about The Smurfs: Hidden Village
Is it really for children, or is it a family game in disguise?
It's a true family game: the rules are simple, turns are quick, and iconography is clear. An 8-year-old can play without problems if guided in the first few turns. But it's not trivial: adults also have to think about their moves, and losing is possible. It's more accessible than Pandemic, less complex than Forbidden Desert.
Do you need to know the Smurfs to enjoy it?
No. The theme helps you get into the world, but the mechanics stand on their own. If you ever watched the Smurfs as a child, it will make you smile. If you don't know them, it remains a well-made cooperative worker placement game with cute illustrations. The game does not require prior knowledge.
How repetitive is it after 5-6 games?
The structure is always the same: build houses, avoid Gargamel. Variability comes from Smurf powers (you only play with a few per game) and random inventions. After about ten games, you've seen all the main combinations. It's a game to pull out when you need something quick and cooperative, not for a marathon session.
Does it work well with 1-2 players, or do you need a group?
Solo play becomes a logistical puzzle: you manage multiple Smurfs and optimize actions. It works, but it loses the cooperative discussion that is the heart of the game. Two players is better, but the ideal game is 3-4 players: enough to create debate, not too many to slow down the pace. With five, it risks getting lengthy.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The text on the cards is minimal and the iconography is clear, so even those with basic English can play without problems. The Smurf names are the original English ones (Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Hefty, Brainy, etc.).
The Smurfs: Hidden Village is a cooperative board game for 1-5 players, ages 8+, lasting 25-35 minutes. Designed by Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc, and Théo Rivière, published by Maestro Media. It uses worker placement mechanics, asymmetrical powers, and deck building to rebuild the Smurf village before Gargamel and Azrael destroy it. Each Smurf has unique abilities, and victory requires coordination and tactical choices. Illustrated by Peyo, it's an accessible but not trivial family game, perfect for introducing children and families to cooperative worker placement. Available on FroGames.it.
