The FroGames Card
You flip a city tile and cover the concrete with green. Then you watch your opponent deploy two troops exactly where you didn't want them. Every move changes the board for everyone.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
The spirits of the forest awaken and cities fall
Treeline is designed by Christopher Ryan Chan and published by Burnt Island Games as the first title in their new small box line: tactical decisions and strategic depth in a compact box. Burnt Island's philosophy is clear: mid-weight games, easy to learn, but with surprising richness beneath the surface.
At the table, you control one of four forest clans (Mushkins, Umbrams, Creeklers, or Stumplings) and compete to reclaim city tiles, restoring the forest and taking control of key tactical positions. When you flip a tile, you transform the city into nature, but at the same time you activate your opponents' turn: your every move triggers chain reactions that change the balance of the board. The forest will return, but will your clan lead it?
What they say abroad
"The spirits of the forest have awoken and a change is coming!"
The spirits of the forest have awoken and a change is coming!
— Burnt Island Games
Treeline is a game that focuses on timing and reading your opponents. Every flipped tile is a double-edged sword: you rebuild your forest but give your rivals the opportunity they were waiting for. First look at a system that promises fast-paced and tense games, where control of the board is gained turn after turn. We will update this card as soon as we have played the first games.

Treeline
The four forest clans
Mushkins, Umbrams, Creeklers, and Stumplings
Mushkins
Fungal clan that thrives in damp, dark areas. Their troops expand rapidly into territories abandoned by opponents.
Umbrams
Shadow spirits that control the densest forests. They excel at defending key positions and slowing enemy expansion.
Creeklers
Guardians of waterways. Their power grows in tiles adjacent to rivers and lakes, where no other clan can compete.
Stumplings
Ancient awakened stumps. Slow but relentless, they convert cities into forest with a brute force that no one can ignore.
🎲How to PlayThe rules in four steps▼
How to Play
The flow of each turn
A game of Treeline is quick: you flip a tile, place your troops, activate opponents. The pace is fast, breaks are short, and decisions are tactical.
Choose a city tile on the board and flip it to reveal the forest beneath. This tile becomes contested territory for all players.
Place a number of your clan's troops on the newly flipped tile and on adjacent tiles, according to your specific clan's rules.
Every other player, in order, places their troops in response to your move. Your action has triggered chain reactions that change the board.
After each series of placements, check who controls each sector of the board. Majorities are fluid and can change every turn.
⏱️Your First GameThe chronicle, moment by moment▼
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
First steps in the concrete
Choose your clan and observe the board made of city tiles. Everyone places their first troops and studies the positions of others: who is close, who controls which sector, where you can expand without too much risk. The first moves seem harmless, but they are already building future conflicts.
You flip the first tile and everything changes
Finally, you cover a city with a forest tile and deploy your troops. But the rules say that now opponents move: each one places clan members in response to your action. You realize you're not playing alone; every move triggers chain reactions.
Key positions heat up
Three players want the same strategic intersection. Troops accumulate, tiles are flipped, majorities fluctuate. Every turn is an implicit negotiation: if I take that tile, you'll take this other one, and he'll slip in between.
The move that turns the table
Someone flips the tile no one expected. Majority positions are reversed, a clan that seemed to be winning loses two key sectors. Mental calculations need to be redone, implicit alliances break, someone curses in dialect.
The forest has a new master
The last city tiles are covered, majorities are counted. The winner emerges from the controlled sectors and the tactical positions defended to the end. Someone immediately wants a rematch, someone else asks which clan they haven't tried yet.
🐸What to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
What to know beforehand
Three things you need to know about Treeline
Every move activates everyone
You don't play in isolation: when you flip a tile, all opponents place troops in response. This means you have to think not only about what you do, but what they will do next. Downtime is minimal but mental pressure is constant.
Clans are asymmetrical
Each clan has different placement rules. It's not just a different color: Creeklers dominate near water, Mushkins expand into empty spaces, Stumplings convert with brute force. Learning to play a clan well requires at least 2-3 games.
The board is modular
Every game starts with a different city tile configuration. There are no universally valid strategies: key positions change, expansion routes reconfigure, and each clan's strengths fluctuate based on the initial setup.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Victory is decided by territorial control: whoever commands the most sectors of the reforested area when the last city tile is flipped.
Victory
- Control the most sectors of the board at the end of the game
- Maintain key tactical positions that earn bonus points for majority control
- Manage to expand your clan into contested areas by leveraging opponents' activations
Defeat
- Lose key majorities because opponents read and anticipated you
- Your moves activate other players at the wrong times, giving them strategic tiles
- Concentrate too many troops in one sector and leave crucial areas for victory empty

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Treeline
What mechanics does Treeline use?
Area majority / influence and modular board. You flip city tiles to reveal the forest, place troops to control sectors, and every move you make activates your opponents' turns. The board constantly changes, and majorities are fluid.
Do the four clans really play differently?
Yes, each clan has asymmetrical placement rules. Mushkins expand into empty spaces, Creeklers dominate near water, Umbrams control dense forests, Stumplings convert with force. It's not just color, these are different strategies.
Does it play well with 2 players?
The range is 2-4 and the game is designed to scale well. With 2 players, the interaction is more direct and tactical; with 4, it becomes more chaotic and unpredictable. The duration remains 30-40 minutes in any configuration.
How long does it take to learn to play?
The basic rules can be explained in 10-15 minutes: flip a tile, place troops, activate opponents. Tactical depth emerges after 1-2 games, once you start to understand the timing of activations and the key areas of the modular board.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The text on the cards is minimal (clan names and iconography), and interaction is visual: the language barrier is low. The rulebook is in English.
