The FroGames Card
You roll the dice, choose which spell to cast. Across the table, the Dragonborn draws a card, and the situation suddenly changes. The game you had in mind three turns ago no longer exists.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A war of mages, two new champions and a dragon to stop
Natural Magic Expansion brings two new Phoenixborn to Ashes Ascendancy: Kanna Galeheart and Maeve Luminvale, both practitioners of natural magic. Each expansion also includes a new Dragonborn, offering new playstyles and challenges to overcome. Designer Nick Conley, art by Gunship Revolution and Sonderflex Studio. The expansion provides 10 dice of the focus magic type to ensure new players have the easiest path to expand their collection.
Ashes introduces the world of Argaia, where powerful mage-warriors called Phoenixborn saved humanity and now clash among themselves to claim absolute divinity. Players select a pool of 10 custom dice that act as a source of magic during the game. Each round you roll the dice, then spend them during your turn to fuel spells and summon allies and magical creatures from your imagination. In solo or cooperative play, player-controlled Phoenixborn battle against a Dragonborn, an otherworldly enemy intent on killing the children of the Phoenix. These games play similarly to competitive Ashes, except the Dragonborn is controlled by a simple but challenging system, customizable according to experience level.

Ashes Ascendancy: Natural Magic Expansion
The Dragonborn is controlled by a simple but challenging system, customizable according to experience level. The experience is complete and designed for solo play from the base set. It loses the psychological interaction of human dueling, but the automa system is robust.
What's in the box
Two new decks, an unprecedented enemy, and ten dice
Kanna Galeheart
Practitioner of natural and astral magic. Prepare to fight Kanna's merciless Tailwind blows. Dedicated pre-built deck, aggressive tactics with quick allies.
Maeve Luminvale
Practitioner of natural and artifice magic. Her botanical beast reaches its apex in the form of the Floral Tyrant. Charge these flowery monsters with artifice magic to unleash devastation on the battlefield. Explosive garden evolution.
Indiri Aldair, Dragonborn
Emissary of the ancient dragons, ready to hunt down his masters' enemies. New automa opponent for solo and cooperative play, with unique gameplay style and scalable challenges.
10 Natural Magic dice
10 dice of the natural magic type to ensure new players have the easiest path to expand their collection. Dedicated symbols, immediate integration with existing base set dice.
🎲How to PlayThe rules in four steps▼
How to Play
The flow of each round
Each round, you roll your dice, then spend those dice during your turn to power your spells and summon allies and magical creatures. Action and reaction alternate until exhaustion or victory.
You refresh exhausted cards, draw until you have five cards in hand, and roll your 10 dice. The symbols obtained are your resource for this round. You can manipulate some results, but not all.
Players take turns. Spend dice to play cards, attack, or use Phoenixborn abilities. You can pass. When both pass consecutively, the game proceeds. Interrupts (reaction spells) trigger when necessary.
The Dragonborn draws one or more cards from its automa deck. Each card activates specific effects: attacks, summons, control abilities. No human choice: the system is deterministic but unpredictable in drawing.
Remove temporary tokens, eliminated creatures go to the discard pile, check victory or defeat conditions. If no one has won, restart from step 1 with a new dice roll.
⏱️Your First GameThe chronicle, moment by moment▼
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choose your hand
The First Five mechanic allows you to start the game with five cards of your choice, giving you a solid foundation in the direction you intend to take your deck. There's no luck in the initial draw. You build the opening you planned during deckbuilding.
The first dice roll
You have 10 dice to roll and power your magic each round. Even the luck of the roll can be mitigated in various clever ways, ensuring your spells don't run out and your hand doesn't get clogged. But if the symbols don't come up, Plan A fails. You move to Plan B, or improvise.
The Dragonborn draws
You've just summoned a powerful ally. The Dragonborn draws a card from its automa deck, activates an effect, and your ally is targeted or exhausted. The artificial opponent is not passive: it attacks, controls, and scales in difficulty.
The interrupt action
The action system allows players to choose targets carefully and constantly plan their strategy around the opponent's next actions. You play a card. The other reacts. You react to the reaction. There are no passive turns.
The Phoenixborn falls
The game ends when a player's Phoenixborn is defeated. You lose your last life point because you spent too much of your deck as a resource, or because the Dragonborn's final attack caught you unprepared. End. Reshuffle for a rematch.
🐸Good to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
Good to know beforehand
Three things you need to know
It's an expansion, the base set is needed
A copy of Ashes Ascendancy Starter Set is required to play. It is not standalone. Without the base set, you won't have the rulebook, game board, or the astral and artifice dice necessary for the included decks. Do not buy this box if you don't already own the base set.
Dice can be frustrating
You roll 10 dice each round. Even the luck of the roll can be mitigated in various clever ways, but if you roll six wrong symbols in a row, your turn is crippled. Acceptable for those who love risk, frustrating for those who hate depending on chance.
Deckbuilding is pre-game
It's a pre-built deckbuilding game, where you select your usable cards before starting. During the game, you don't build your deck: you manage your hand, dice, and the battlefield. If you're looking for an evolutionary deck-builder like Dominion, this isn't it.
🏆Victory and DefeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The game ends when a player's Phoenixborn has been defeated. No points, no alternative conditions: either you're standing, or you're eliminated.
Victory
- Reduce the opponent's (or Dragonborn's) Phoenixborn life points to zero through direct attacks or spell damage
- Completely exhaust the opponent's deck, forcing them to take lethal fatigue damage
- In cooperative mode: fulfill the Dragonborn's specific victory condition before you or your ally are defeated
Defeat
- Your Phoenixborn's life points drop to zero from damage taken in combat or from enemy spells
- Your deck runs out, and you can no longer draw: you take fatigue damage until your Phoenixborn dies
- In cooperative mode: one of the allied Phoenixborn is defeated before eliminating the Dragonborn
Ashes Ascendancy is a mage duel where every dice roll can turn the tide of the game. Natural Magic Expansion gives you two new champions and a dragon to stop. First reading, July 2026.
