FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Some shout 'Little Red Riding Hood!', some curse the impossible clue, some laugh at the absurd connection. And in the end, no one remembers who won — just that ridiculous combination of words.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
When fairy tales enter the world of clues
Vlaada Chvátil created a phenomenon with Codenames, the deduction party game that has conquered tables worldwide. This thematic expansion brings classic fairy tales into the game mechanism, with new words carefully chosen to add a narrative flavour to your games.
At the table you do exactly what you always do: give clues to a word, look for impossible connections, risk hitting the assassin. But this time Little Red Riding Hood can meet Captain Hook in the world of Oz, and the combinations become even more absurd and memorable.

In half an hour, someone will have given the most absurd clue of the evening. It always happens when fairy tales come into play.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The table prepares
Shuffle the new cards with the base ones, or use only 25 fairy tale themed cards. The table fills with familiar yet unexpected words: Hook, Mirror, Forest. Someone is already smiling.
The first creative clue
The spymaster looks at their words: Little Red Riding Hood, Wolf, Grandma. The clue is obvious, but risks being too easy. They say "Fairy Tale, 3" and cross their fingers. The team begins to discuss.
The absurd connection
Someone gives "Magic, 2" to connect Fairy and Lamp. The team confidently points to Fairy, then hesitates: what if the other is Wand? Or Spell? The discussion heats up, the table laughs.
The risk that changes everything
The other team attempts a four-word clue. It works for three, then someone suggests the fourth. Silence. They touch the card. It's the assassin. Screams, laughter, disbelief. The game turns upside down.
Victory by a whisker
One team has found all its words. The other still has two, but the final clue is perfect: "Castle, 2". They touch Tower and Prince. Victory. Applause, immediate replay with new cards.
How to play
The flow of each turn
An expansion doesn't change the rules: it just adds new words to the mechanism you already know.
Add the 50 new words to the base set of Codenames or Duet, in any proportion. You can also play two games using only the 25 cards from the expansion.
If you play Codenames: Pictures, replace some of the base images with the 4 new fairy tale themed cards included in the expansion.
Replace the standard agent tiles with the thematic ones included (2 for Codenames, 1 for Duet) to visually customize the game.
The rest is identical: give clues, find connections, avoid the assassin. The new words create unexpected narrative combinations, but the rules don't change.
Why it's different from other expansions
Four reasons why it works
Curated themed words
These are not 50 random words: they are characters, places, and objects from classic fairy tales, chosen to create interesting narrative connections. Little Red Riding Hood, Oz, Hook, Mirror: words that immediately evoke stories.
Full compatibility
Works with base Codenames and Codenames: Duet, with no extra rules needed. Mix the cards in any proportion or play pure fairy tale themed games using only the 25 from the expansion.
Versatile content
In addition to words, you'll find thematic agent tiles for both versions of the game and 4 picture cards for Codenames: Pictures. An expansion that customizes multiple levels of the game.
Narrative connections
Fantasy-themed words create more creative and memorable clues. "Forest, 3" to connect Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hunter is a clue that tells a story, not just an abstract category.
Multiplied replayability
By adding 50 new words to the base pool, the possible combinations explode. Even if you've played Codenames a hundred times, the new cards create unprecedented situations.
No learning curve
You don't have to learn anything: open the box, shuffle the cards, play. The expansion adds variety without adding complexity, perfect for effortlessly refreshing the game.
How it ends
Victory and defeat as always
The expansion doesn't change the victory conditions: it just adds new words to the game you already know.
Victory
- Codenames: your team finds all its agents before the other team
- Codenames: Duet: you two find all 15 agents within 9 turns without touching the assassin
- In both cases, the new themed words make the path to victory more narrative
Defeat
- Codenames: the other team completes its agents before you
- Codenames: Duet: you touch the assassin or run out of available turns without having found all agents
- Fantasy-themed words don't make the game easier: they make mistakes more memorable
An expansion that does exactly what it should: adds thematic variety without touching the rules. If Codenames is already on your shelf, this is fuel for a hundred more games.

FAQ on Codenames: Fairy Tales Expansion Pack
