The FroGames Card
You flip a tile. A precious vase. You flip another. A gem. Another still. A creature. The table holds its breath. You smile and flip another.
WHAT IT IS
An archaeological dig where every tile is a gamble
Buried Memories is designed by Kristian Amundsen Østby, the Norwegian designer behind Escape: The Curse of the Temple and Automania, with illustrations by Gjermund Bohne. Aporta Games is a Norwegian publisher specializing in family-style eurogames. The game presents itself as a layered archaeological exploration where each turn you ask a simple question: do I stop or do I go on?
You flip tiles from the dig site, revealing relics, gems, fragments of vases and statues. But if you draw two identical creatures, your turn ends, and you lose everything. You complete objectives, unlock sealed envelopes that add content to future games. The stated weight is very light, the promised duration is 20-30 minutes, and the player count goes up to 6 (with an integrated solo mode). A push your luck game with a progressive structure that evolves game after game.
What they say abroad
"In Buried Memories, players become explorers searching the layered remains of forgotten civilizations."
— Aporta Games
Every opened envelope adds surprises and new artifacts. The game asks you to return to the table to discover what's next.

Buried Memories
BGG data confirms 1-6 players: solo play is provided. We don't yet know if it uses a threshold scoring system or a true automa. The push your luck structure works well in solo (see Friday or Under Falling Skies), but it loses the social element of shared tension.
What you find beneath the layers
The elements of the dig
Vases and statues
Fragments to assemble. Each completed piece brings you closer to your goals, but you must draw them all before the double creature appears.
Gems
Precious resources that boost your score. Few tiles, high value: when you see them, you want to keep digging.
Hidden creatures
The threat that ends the turn. One creature is fine. Two identical ones and you lose everything you've revealed. The heart of push your luck.
Sealed envelopes
Unlock new artifacts, new mechanics, new surprises. The content evolves game after game without being a true legacy game.

How to play
The flow of each turn
A turn lasts until you stop or until you draw the second matching creature.
Choose a tile from the top level of the dig (those not covered by others). Flip it over and reveal its content: gem, shard, creature.
You can keep everything you've flipped so far and score points, or continue and flip another tile. There's no limit to the number of tiles.
If you have flipped two creatures with the same symbol, your turn ends immediately. You lose everything you collected this turn and score no points.
If you stopped voluntarily, collect gems, assemble completed vases and statues, check if you have met objectives. Some objectives unlock envelopes with new content.
⏱️Your first gameThe chronicle, moment by moment▼
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
First dig
You place the excavation site in the center. Covered tiles in layers. The rules last five minutes: you flip tiles, complete sets, stop before the double creature. The first player flips three tiles, stops, takes points. You already understand everything.
The first gamble
Your turn. You flip a gem. Then a vase shard. Then another gem. The temptation to flip another one is very strong. You do it. Red creature. Okay, one creature doesn't end anything. Do you want to stop? No. You flip another one. Blue creature. You breathe. You stop.
Someone makes a mistake
Another player pushes it. Four tiles, five, six. They flip the second matching creature. They lose everything. The table laughs and sympathizes. They shake their head, knowing they overdid it. But they'd do it again.
First envelope opened
Someone completes the objective. You open a sealed envelope. Inside are new tiles, new artifacts. You shuffle them into the deck. The next game will be different. You already imagine what you might find.
Final count
You count gems, completed sets, objective bonuses. Someone wins by a small margin. Someone else says that if they had stopped one turn earlier, they would have won. The next game starts two minutes later. With one more envelope in the game.
🐸What to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
What to know beforehand
Three things you need to know
High luck, not control
Fast, maybe too fast
20-30 minutes declared means every game is a filler. Unlockable envelopes promise progression, but we don't know yet how many there are or how much the game really changes. It could run out in a few evenings.
Scales up to 6, with pros and cons
1-6 players is a huge range for a push your luck game. Solitaire exists, a 6-player party too. But downtime and pace change: with 6 players, you wait five turns before flipping tiles again. It's not a flaw if you're looking for a scalable filler, but it is if you want control over the pace.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The game ends when a player reaches the target score or when all available objectives are completed.
Victory
- Reach the target score declared at the start of the game before others
- Complete the most sets and objectives compared to rivals
- Accumulate gems and bonuses from artifacts unlocked in previous games
Defeat (or missed victory)
- Push too often and lose too many turns by drawing double creatures
- Opponents complete key objectives before you
- You stop too early and accumulate fewer points than others
Buried Memories is played on the thin line between caution and greed. Every opened envelope promises that the next game will be different.

FAQ about Buried Memories
Do the envelopes open only once or can I reopen them?
Each envelope opens only once when you complete the corresponding objective. The content (new tiles, artifacts) is permanently added to the game and appears in all subsequent games. It's not a destructive legacy: you don't tear cards or write on the materials.
Does it really work well for 1 to 6 players?
The range is wide. The official solitaire mode exists (min_players = 1), but we don't yet have details on how it works (automaton, score thresholds, variants). With 5-6 players, downtime increases: you wait more turns between your hands. For a quick filler, 2-4 is probably the sweet spot.
How long does a game really last?
The declared duration is 20-30 minutes. With setup and explanation included, the first game can take up to 40 minutes. Once some envelopes are unlocked, the setup increases slightly (more tiles to shuffle), but the core of the game remains fast: flip, decide, pass.
What mechanics does Buried Memories use?
The main mechanics are Push Your Luck (you flip tiles until you stop or bust) and Set Collection (you assemble vases, statues, collect gems). The structure with unlockable envelopes is reminiscent of light legacy games or progressive unlocks, but without destroying components.
Is it available in Italian?
The edition for sale is in English. The text on the cards is minimal (symbols, icons), so the language barrier is low. The rulebook is in English.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
Buried Memories is a push your luck board game for 1-6 players by Kristian Amundsen Østby (Escape: The Curse of the Temple) and published by Aporta Games. Duration 20-30 minutes, recommended age 8+. Players explore a layered archaeological dig site, flipping tiles to retrieve gems and artifacts, completing ancient vases and statues. The risk is drawing two matching creatures: you lose everything for the turn. The main mechanic is Set Collection combined with Push Your Luck. Each completed objective unlocks sealed envelopes that add content to future games, creating progression without being a true legacy. Includes an official solitaire mode. Available on FroGames.it.
