FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
The scent of rare ingredients, the buzz of the market, a customer waiting for their potion. And you hoping no one snatches it before you do.
What it's about
Yatamon's magic market waits for no one
In Yanari: The Witches Market, you are a skilled witch working in the most enchanted market in the city of Yatamon, in the world of Obojima — a fantasy universe inspired by Studio Ghibli films and the aesthetics of retro games like The Legend of Zelda. The design is by Daniel Solis, published by 1985 Games.
Collect ingredient cards, then use them to brew potions requested by customers as they wander through the market. A perfect potion unlocks bonus rewards. An acceptable potion still scores points and opens access to new customers. Two actions per turn, plus a possible bonus action from the cauldron: enough to build satisfying combos every round.
Five witches with unique abilities, special cards, and secret objectives ensure that no two games are alike. You learn in ten minutes. You play in less than an hour. You'll want to play again immediately.
FroGames Editorial Notes
A game that achieves the difficult feat: it seems simple, but every turn hides a small decision that changes everything. The cauldron's combo system transforms a card collection into something more intelligent.
The secret of Yanari in one line
The Ghibli aesthetic is not just decoration — it permeates the pace of the game. Every customer has a story, every potion a name. You play strategically, but you feel like you're in a fairytale.
From the game experience
Yanari: The Witches Market
How it works
What you'll find in the game and how to use it
5 Witches with unique abilities
Each character has a special ability that radically changes your playstyle. Choose who you want to be — then be good at it.
Ingredients to collect
Ingredient cards that combine to create the potions requested by customers. The choice of what to collect — and when to use it — is at the heart of the game.
Bonus cauldron
In addition to the two standard actions, a bonus action from the cauldron opens up unexpected combos. The perfect turn is built — it doesn't happen by chance.
Secret objectives
Each game adds a personal objective hidden from opponents. You don't know where the other witch is going — and she doesn't know where you're going.
Yanari's market closes at sunset. But whoever brewed the right potion will remember that evening for a long time.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choose your witch, watch the market
Your witch has a special gift. Some are good at collecting rare ingredients, others at transforming them faster. Meanwhile, customers begin to crowd the stalls — each wanting something specific. And someone wants the same thing you do.
Gather or prepare? You can't do everything
Two actions per turn. Gather an ingredient, satisfy a customer, activate the cauldron for a bonus. Your hand is full of beautiful cards, none used yet. Then the other player takes the customer you wanted — and you have to recalculate everything.
The combo you didn't expect
You have the right ingredient, the cauldron is ready, your witch's ability activates at just the right moment. In a single turn, you serve two customers, unlock a bonus, and get closer to your secret objective. The table looks at you with respect — or fear.
Secret objectives come to light
Mid-game, you start to understand where the other witches are heading. She's not just gathering random ingredients — she's completing something. And you're completing something too. Maybe it's time to stop ignoring each other and start racing.
The market closes. Points are tallied.
End of game. Secret objectives are revealed — and someone screams with joy because no one noticed. Potions, satisfied customers, unlocked bonuses are counted. Everything is put back in the box, wondering which witch to try next time.
How to play
The flow of each round
Two mandatory actions, one possible bonus. You learn it in ten minutes, master it in two games.
At the start of the round, new customers arrive with their requests. Each wants a specific potion — and serving them perfectly is worth more than serving them approximately.
In turn order, each player performs two actions: gathering ingredient cards, serving a customer with a potion, or activating their special witch ability.
In certain turns, you can activate a bonus action from the cauldron, in addition to the two standard ones. This is where the best combos are born — and the moves others don't expect.
Serving a customer perfectly unlocks their personal bonus. Serving acceptably still earns points and frees up space for new customers. Every choice has a cost and a reward.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
Asymmetry among witches
Five characters with radically different abilities mean five playstyles. There is no "best" witch — there's the right one for you in that game.
Variable secret objectives
Each game adds a hidden layer of planning. You don't know exactly where your opponent is going — and they don't know about you. The moment of final revelation is always a surprise.
Cauldron combo system
The bonus action is not guaranteed — it must be built. When activated at the right moment, it transforms an ordinary turn into something memorable. It's the strategic heart of the game.
Two ways to serve a customer
Perfect potion or acceptable potion — both are worth points, but perfection unlocks bonuses. The choice between maximizing one customer or serving two mediocre ones is always present.
Artwork inspired by Studio Ghibli
It's not just aesthetics: the world of Obojima has visual and narrative coherence that transforms each card into a piece of a larger story. Yanari market feels like a real place.
Perfect duration for the format
Thirty to fifty minutes isn't much — but the game doesn't run out quickly. You always finish with the feeling of having played a complete game, not just a filler.
How it ends
How to win at Yanari market
There is no single path to victory. Satisfied customers, unlocked bonuses, and secret objectives add up in different ways for each witch.
Victory
- Accumulate more points than opponents at the end of the set number of rounds
- Serve customers perfectly to unlock their bonuses and earn extra points
- Complete your secret objective — it can make a difference in the final tally
Low score
- Accumulating ingredients without ever using them doesn't earn points — the market rewards those who act
- Ignoring customers with powerful bonuses leaves valuable points on the table
- Losing sight of your own secret objective to chase after others'
Yanari: The Witches Market is a game that is beautiful without being frivolous — accessible without sacrificing depth. The Yatamon market awaits you.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Yanari: The Witches Market
What distinguishes it from other card-gathering games?
The cauldron combo system and asymmetrical witches. It's not about blind gathering and playing — you build effective turns by leveraging your character's unique ability and the cauldron's bonus action. The result is a game that seems simple but offers more choices than it appears.
Is it worth it for those who are not board game enthusiasts?
Yes, it's one of the stated design strengths. Ten minutes of explanation, 30-50 minute game, intuitive rules — but with enough depth to satisfy more experienced players. It's a great gateway for those who want something more than a party game without tackling a 30-page manual.
How many players does it work best with?
With 3-4 players, the competition for customers is more lively, and secret objectives create more suspense at the end. With 2 players, the game becomes more direct and tactical. Both configurations work — the pace changes more than the quality of the experience.
Can it be played solo?
No, Yanari: The Witches Market is designed for 2-4 players and does not include an official solo mode. The competition for customers and the revelation of secret objectives are central to the experience and require multiple players.
Is it related to the Obojima role-playing game?
Yanari is set in the world of Obojima but is a completely standalone board game — you don't need to know the RPG to play it. Those familiar with Obojima will recognize characters, potions, and locations; for everyone else, it's simply a fantastic fantasy game with a coherent aesthetic.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition. Ingredient and customer cards contain useful text for playing — a basic knowledge of English is recommended, although the vocabulary used is simple and contextual.
