FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
One card at a time. One path at a time. And in the end, you look at the table and think: I built all this.
What it's about
A path puzzle that fits in your pocket
Trailblazers is a drafting and tile-laying game designed by Ryan Courtney with illustrations by Seth Lucas. Each game you build your personal network of hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking trails — starting and returning to the same camp. Only closed loops score points.
Each turn you receive eight cards, choose two, and pass the rest. Then again, and again. Five minutes to explain, thirty for a whole game. You can play it solo, with two, or with four, at home or on a cabin table.
The Travel Edition is designed for travel: a rigid clamshell case, a carabiner to attach it to your backpack, water-resistant cards. It also includes the Animals expansion and two solo modes to play anywhere.
What they say abroad
"Trailblazers is unspeakably pleasant."
Trailblazers is unspeakably pleasant.
— Meeple Mountain
It's the game you throw in your backpack without thinking. Fifteen minutes to explain, half an hour to play, and it works anywhere there's a table.
From gameplay experience
Trailblazers: Travel Edition
The Travel Edition includes two official solo modes designed by Ryan Courtney. The objective system and push-your-luck make the solo game as satisfying as multiplayer — for some, even more so.
Your equipment
What you use in every game
Hiking trails
The most flexible path: adapts to the terrain and always finds its way home. The safe path when others are taking risks.
Mountain bike trails
Fast, long, but more rigid. You plan the loop in advance and hope the right cards arrive in time.
Kayak routes
Follow the river, find the rhythm of the current. The path that rewards those who know how to wait for the right card at the right time.
Objective cards
First To, End Game, Animals. Each game has different objectives that change what's worth building — and when to stop.
You look up from the table and thirty minutes have passed. The map you built is yours — and you'll never make one exactly like it.

Recommended sleeves2 formats · 176 cards total
Trail and Player cards are in the small elongated format (35×70), objective and camp cards in the square format (70×70). The original cards are already water-resistant — sleeves are only needed for wear and tear from intensive play.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Unboxing the little box
The tuck box is small; you open it with one finger. The internal card tray keeps everything tidy — take out the cards, deal them, and in two minutes you're ready. The first camp is in the middle of the table, eight cards in each hand. You look at them and already think about which one to keep.
Choose two, pass the rest, repeat
The drafting gets into rhythm almost immediately. You choose two cards, pass the other six to the next player, and arrange them on your side of the table. One near the camp, one next to the other. The trail begins to take shape. You look up for a second and see the others concentrating on their own maps — everyone in their own forest.
Push your luck: extend or close?
Your bike trail is long, but it hasn't closed yet. If the right card comes in the next two turns, you score fifteen points. If it doesn't, you score zero. Others are watching your choices — they understand what you're hoping for and pass you the worst cards. This is when Trailblazers becomes a game of nerves.
The last round: no drafting, just choice
In the last turns, you no longer draw cards — you only play the cards left in your hand. Each card is a problem to solve, a piece that must fit exactly where it's needed. Calculations are made under one's breath, loops are measured with a glance, whatever can be closed is closed.
Points are counted, but the map is watched
At the end, everyone looks at their map before scoring. "I almost closed this branch here," "Look how I used the overlap." Someone wins, but the real satisfaction is the puzzle you built. Everything goes back into the tuck box. You're already thinking about the next game.
How to play
The flow of each round
Four simple phases that repeat. You learn in ten minutes, master in two games.
Each player receives eight trail cards. Everyone looks at their hand simultaneously — no one waits for their turn, everyone thinks together.
Choose two cards, pass the other six to the next player. This repeats three times: each round leaves you with two new cards to place.
Cards must touch or overlap previously placed cards. You can cover an existing card to change the trail's direction — one of the most powerful moves in the game.
After four rounds, points are counted. Only closed loops score — one point per segment. Those who bet too much on length risk scoring zero.
Why choose the Pocket
Six reasons to start here
Gift price
It's the version Bitewing calls "affordable and giftable". It costs little enough to put in a bag without thinking — but it's a real game, not a courtesy gift.
Card overlap
You can cover an already placed card to change the path. A mistake is never final — it's an opportunity to redesign. Few tile-laying games allow this.
Simultaneous drafting
No waiting for your turn. Everyone chooses together, everyone thinks together. The game flows quickly even with four players — zero downtime.
Clean push-your-luck
Extending a trail pays a lot — but only if you close the loop. Deciding when to stop and close safely is the real mental challenge of the game.
Card tray included
Even in the smallest format, Bitewing has included an internal organizer for the cards. Everything stays tidy in the tuck box without needing to buy anything extra.
Perfect gateway
If you want to introduce someone to Trailblazers without asking them to invest in a complete edition, this is the entry point. Same game, minimal threshold.
How to win
Two scores, one golden rule
Closing costs patience, extending costs risk. The choice between the two is the heart of every Trailblazers game.
Points from trails
- Each closed loop is worth one point for every segment it comprises
- The longer the trail, the more points — but it must return to the correct camp
- Unclosed trails are worth zero: push-your-luck is unforgiving
Points from objectives
- "First To" cards: whoever reaches an objective first earns a bonus
- "End Game" cards: final score for those who excel in a characteristic
- For Animals objectives, Travel, Standard, or Deluxe editions are required
Trailblazers: Pocket Edition is the most affordable entry point to one of the best drafting-puzzle games in recent years. Same game, essential format, gift price.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Trailblazers: Pocket Edition
What distinguishes the Pocket Edition from the Travel and other versions?
The Pocket is the pure base game in the most essential format: a small tuck box with an included card tray. No Animals expansion, no official solo modes, no hard case or carabiner. The Travel Edition adds the Animals expansion, two solo modes, a clamshell case, and water-resistant cards. The Standard and Deluxe editions accommodate up to 8 players and include more expansions. The Pocket is the most economical version — designed as a gateway or a gift.
Is it worth it if the Animals expansion is missing?
Yes, and that's the point of the Pocket Edition. The base game of Trailblazers is complete on its own — the Animals expansion adds variations and extra objectives, but it's not necessary to enjoy the drafting and trail-building puzzle. If you like the game and want more content in the future, you can always upgrade to higher editions. The Pocket is the minimum expense to see if you like it.
Is it playable solo?
The Pocket Edition does not include the official solo modes designed by Ryan Courtney — those are in the Travel Edition. If you're looking for an official solo experience supported by the author, you should opt for that version. The Pocket is primarily intended for competitive games for 2 to 4 players.
Is it suitable for those who have never played modern board games?
Yes, it's one of the best gateways available — and the Pocket Edition is the cheapest way to get into it. The rules can be explained in ten minutes, and the first game flows smoothly. The pace is quick, interaction is low, and no one is eliminated. It's perfect for opening the door to the world of modern games without intimidating those accustomed only to classic games.
Is it really a good gift?
For the price, yes. The Pocket Edition is explicitly positioned by Bitewing as "affordable and giftable" — a version designed to be given as a gift without straining the wallet. The base game is the real deal, designed by Ryan Courtney, with the same experience as the more expensive editions. The difference is only in the box shape and extra content. For a birthday, an end-of-year present, or a gift exchange, it's a choice that works.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition. However, the game is extremely visual: the cards are iconographic and have no text, the rules are short and easily translatable. You don't need to know English to play, only to read the rulebook the first time.
Trailblazers: Pocket Edition is the pocket-sized version of the drafting and tile-laying board game for 1-4 players (ages 8+, 30 minutes duration) designed by Ryan Courtney with illustrations by Seth Lucas and published by Bitewing Games. Main mechanic: simultaneous drafting with network building and card overlapping. Players build loops of hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking trails that start and return to a camp of the corresponding color. The Pocket Edition contains the pure base game in a compact tuck box with an included card tray. It does not include the Animals expansion or official solo modes — those are available in the Travel Edition or in the Standard and Deluxe editions (which support up to 8 players). Positioned by Bitewing Games as "affordable and giftable," it is the most economical version of the game — ideal as a gateway or a low-cost gift. English Edition. Available on FroGames.it.
