FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Some buy the most powerful machine. Some count their workers. Then the energy bill arrives, and the accounts change for everyone.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A factory, many workers, and a relentless bill
Power Grid: Factory Manager is a management board game set in the Power Grid universe, but completely independent. Designed by Friedemann Friese with retro illustrations by Lars-Arne "Maura" Kalusky, it puts you in charge of a factory with one goal: to earn more than everyone else.
You use your workers to buy the best machines and robots from the market, organize them in the limited factory space, and make them produce at maximum capacity. But the price of energy rises every round: a too-greedy factory can see profits suddenly vanish — every good entrepreneur's nightmare. In Power Grid: Factory Manager, the winner is the efficient one, not the one who produces the most.
The secret of Factory Manager
It's not how much you produce, but how much energy it costs you: the biggest factory can be the least profitable.
The secret of Factory Manager in one sentence
Keep few workers and play first, keep many and do more: each round is a small dilemma.
From the game experience
Power Grid: Factory Manager
What you manage
Your factory, piece by piece
Your factory
A limited space to arrange machines and robots. Each tile takes up space: efficiency comes from how you organize everything.
Machines and robots
You buy the best machines and robots that work instead of workers from the market. More productivity, but watch out for consumption.
The price of energy
Energy costs rise round by round. A factory full of power-hungry machines can see its profit disappear in an instant.
Your workers
Workers buy from the market and operate the machines. How many to use and when is one of the key choices each turn.
At the end of the game, money is counted. But the story you remember is that machine bought at the right time — or the energy that cost you the victory.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Everyone hunting for tiles
The market fills with machines, robots, and warehouses. Everyone evaluates what their factory needs and how many workers to employ. Turn order is already a battle: whoever buys first pays more.
The first heavy machine
Someone buys a powerful machine, but it's energy-hungry. It produces a lot and takes control of the table. Everyone nods… until they see the rising price of energy.
Energy starts to bite
The price of energy increases round by round. Factories full of robots see their margins shrink. Everything is recalculated: better one less machine and a few euros saved on the bill.
The efficiency move
Someone reorganizes their factory and produces twice as much with half the energy. They don't have the biggest factory, but the most profitable one. The table realizes, too late, who is truly in the lead.
Profits are counted
Five rounds and the game ends. Earnings are tallied and costs are subtracted. The one who managed best wins, not the one who produced the most — and that's usually a surprise for some.
How to play
The flow of each round
The game lasts five rounds, and each always follows the same phases. It's quick to learn, but every choice impacts the final profit.
Decide how many workers to keep active: fewer workers mean playing earlier and paying less at the market, more workers mean more purchasing power and production. A dilemma every round.
In turn order, buy tiles from the market: machines, robots, warehouses, offices. The market empties and prices change for those who come after.
Activate machines with your workers and robots, produce goods, and sell them. More active machines mean more profit — and more energy consumed.
The price of energy rises, you pay for consumption, and the market restocks. Those who overdid it with energy-hungry machines feel the blow to their wallet.
Why it works
Six things that make it special
Efficiency, not quantity
The winner is the one who produces more with less energy, not the one who fills the factory. A management game where optimization is truly everything.
A dynamic market
An intelligent mechanism decides which tiles arrive on the market and at what price. Reading the market and turn order is half the game.
Energy that ruins you
Energy costs rise round by round. The most productive factory can become the least profitable: always keep an eye on it.
Turn order is a choice
Few workers to play earlier and pay less, many to do more: every round you decide which compromise to accept.
Lean rules, dense choices
It's quick to learn but takes many games to master. Medium weight (3/5 on BGG), lasts about an hour, zero downtime.
In the world of Power Grid
An independent game set in the Power Grid universe by Friedemann Friese. You don't need to own Power Grid to play.
How it ends
How to win (and how to lose profit)
There's no elimination: you play until the end and count your earnings. But how you manage your factory decides everything.
How to win
- Have the most money at the end of the game
- Profit = goods sold minus energy and management costs
- Efficiency counts, not factory size
Mistakes that cost
- Filling the factory with energy-hungry machines
- Ignoring the rising price of energy
- Keeping too many workers and losing the best turn order
Power Grid: Factory Manager is a management game for those who love to optimize: few rules, a dynamic market, and energy breathing down your neck. For 2 to 5 players, a game in about an hour.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Power Grid: Factory Manager
Do I need to know or own Power Grid?
No. Factory Manager is a completely independent game, set in the same universe but with its own rules. It does not share the mechanics of Power Grid and does not require anything from the original game.
Is it just another "buy and produce" management game?
No. The core is the tension between production and energy: the more machines you accumulate, the more you risk energy costs devouring your profits. It's an efficiency puzzle, not a simple accumulation.
How complex is it?
Medium weight: 3 out of 5 according to BGG. The rules can be explained in about twenty minutes, but the choices are dense. Ideal for those who have already tried some management games, less so for complete beginners.
How many players is it best with?
For 2 to 5 players. With more players, the market is more contested, and turn order matters more; with two, it's more controlled and calculated. In about 60 minutes for any configuration.
Is it playable solo?
No, it does not have an official solo mode. It is designed for direct competition on the market for 2 to 5 players.
Is it in Italian?
This is the English edition (Rio Grande Games). The text on the tiles is minimal and iconographic: once the rules are learned, language is not an obstacle at the table.
Power Grid: Factory Manager is an economic management board game for 2-5 players (ages 12+, duration about 60 minutes), designed by Friedemann Friese with illustrations by Lars-Arne "Maura" Kalusky and published by 2F-Spiele and Rio Grande Games. Set in the world of Power Grid but completely independent, it puts each player in charge of a factory: use your workers to buy the best machines and robots from the market, organize them in your factory space, and produce them with maximum efficiency. The real enemy is the price of energy, which rises round by round: an overly greedy factory sees its profits disappear. Management mechanics, dynamic market, and variable turn order, medium weight (3/5 on BGG). English edition. Available on FroGames.it
