The FroGames review
You enter the dungeon, you meet a merchant. You ask him about the village. The app lets you choose: help him, rob him, or move on. You choose. Three hours later that choice will save you. Or condemn you.
WHAT IT IS
A dungeon crawler where the narrator is an AI
Designed by Quentin Deleau and Adrien Smondack, published by Arkada Studio in 2021, Erune is a fantasy dungeon crawler that blends a physical board with a mobile app. The Spirit of Erune, an incorporeal narrator living in the free app (iOS/Android), guides each game: it reads dialogues, manages random events among thousands of variants, answers rules questions, and reveals treasures and traps. Miniatures painted by Logan Chaix, Chen Yang Hsu, and Raphaël Minette traverse modular tiles while the app tracks every choice.
Each game is a quest against the Shadow Master. Turn-based explorations, action point management, dice rolling to fight hordes of monsters. But the game doesn't end: choices branch the campaign, dialogues with NPCs change outcomes, and items discovered by the app become permanent. Your choices have consequences that the app remembers. It plays 1 to 5 players, cooperatively or competitively, with campaign saving.
What they say abroad
"Enter the world of Erune and roam through its darkest dungeons..."
— Arkada Studio
Erune doesn't replace the classic dungeon crawler: it hybridizes it. The board is physical, the app is narrative. And when the app asks if you want to betray the group, you realize it's neither a video game nor a pure game.
— FroGames
Erune
The game is designed for solo play: the app manages enemies, events, and dialogues without the need for an additional automa. The experience is complete, but it loses the political interaction and discussions about choices that emerge in cooperative multiplayer.
What's in the box
The tools for your quest
Modular dungeon tiles
Each game you build the dungeon as you explore. The app tells you which tile to add, you place it and move the miniatures on it. The labyrinth changes every time.
Adventurer and monster miniatures
Five playable heroes, dozens of enemy miniatures (goblins, undead, bosses). Detailed, ready to be painted. You physically move them on the board while the app tracks HP and status.
Erune Spirit App (free)
iOS and Android, requires the physical box to work. Reads dialogues, answers rules questions, generates random events and treasures, saves the campaign. It's the invisible master.
Custom dice and character sheets
Dice for combat and actions, sheets with character progression (levels, abilities, equipment). You use pen and paper to track resources while the app keeps the story.

How to Play
The Flow of Each Turn
An Erune turn: spend action points, the app reacts, the dungeon changes.
You have a pool of action points to spend: movement (1 AP per tile), attack (variable cost), special ability (consult character sheet), interaction (open door, search for treasure). You declare the action, the app or dice resolve it.
After each significant action (opening a door, entering a new room), the app can trigger an event: trap, dialogue with NPC, random encounter, treasure reveal. You read, choose, the app applies the consequences (damage, item, status change).
If there are active monsters, the app tells you how they move and attack (pattern based on enemy type). You roll defensive dice, resolve damage, update HP on your sheet. Monsters don't have an autonomous turn: the app orchestrates everything.
Resolve persistent effects (poison, temporary buffs), update resources (mana, arrows), pass the turn. In cooperative play: the next player begins their turn. In competitive play: the app can assign secret objectives or modify the order. Repeat until quest completed or failed.
⏱️Your First GameThe chronicle, moment by moment▼
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choose your hero and start the quest
Open the app, select the quest (or continue your saved campaign). The app reads the intro: a village burns, a merchant stops you, a voice calls you. Place the first dungeon tile, put your miniature. The Spirit of Erune asks: "What do you do?" and offers you choices. You click, and the story begins.
Explore and fight
Turn by turn, you spend action points: move, attack, open doors. Each new room adds a tile that the app chooses. You encounter monsters: the app reveals type and number, you roll dice for combat. Each room can hide treasures (the app rolls from thousands of items) or traps. The map grows, the dungeon takes shape.
Dialogues and branching choices
You meet an NPC: the app reads the dialogue, offers you options (help them, threaten them, ignore them). You choose and the app records. That choice will influence future quests: the NPC can return as an ally or enemy, open or close paths. You never know what consequences it will have until you experience them.
The boss and the critical moment
You reach the quest objective: a boss, an artifact, an escape. The final combat is always tough: the app manages the enemy's special abilities, events that turn the tables. The dice decide, but accumulated resources (potions, equipment) make the difference. Win or lose, the app closes the chapter.
End of quest and permanent consequences
The app reveals rewards: experience, permanent items, new quests unlocked. If you made wrong choices, dead or betrayed NPCs will not return. The campaign continues: save and resume whenever you want. Your choices are tracked, the story is yours. No other campaign will be the same.
🐸Good to Know FirstThree honest things, from friends▼
Good to know first
Three things you need to know
Total dependence on the app
Without a charged device and installed app, you cannot play. The app is free but requires the physical box (checked via codes). Dead battery = interrupted game. It's not a classic dungeon crawler where the app is optional: here it's the narrative engine. Plan accordingly.
Critical scaling with 4-5 players
In solo or duo play, the game is smooth (60-90 minutes). With 4-5 players, times explode: every choice is discussed, every dialogue read, every combat resolved. Expect 150+ minutes and downtime between turns. The game doesn't speed up: it adds complexity.
App + rulebook learning curve
Basic rules are classic, but the app interface requires familiarity: where to click for rules questions, how to save, how to manage inventory. The first quest will be slow: you'll often consult the app to understand flow and options. It improves greatly from the second one.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Each quest has specific objectives dictated by the app: defeat a boss, retrieve an artifact, escape within N turns. Win or lose, the campaign continues.
Quest Victory
- Complete the main objective of the quest (boss defeated, artifact recovered, NPC saved)
- The app reveals rewards: experience, permanent items, new quests unlocked in the campaign
- In competitive mode: whoever accumulates the most victory points (assigned by the app) wins the session
Defeat or Game Over
- All heroes are KO (HP at zero) before completing the objective
- Fail a time condition imposed by the app (failed escape, enemy reinforcements arrived)
- Make narrative choices that close critical paths (NPC killed needed to progress, artifact destroyed)
Erune is not a dungeon crawler with a counting app: it's a hybrid narrative campaign where the board and artificial intelligence create stories you remember. Every choice has weight, every game is different.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Erune
Is the app free? Can I play without the physical box?
The app (iOS/Android) is free to download, but requires the physical Erune box to function: on startup, it asks to scan codes printed on components to unlock the game. You cannot play with just the app; the board and miniatures are needed. The app is the narrator, the box is the physical world.
What mechanics does Erune use?
Action point management (spend AP to move, attack, use abilities), dice rolling for combat, modular board that you build as you explore, character progression with levels and equipment. The app handles branching narrative, random events from thousands of variants, answers rules questions, saves the campaign.
Do games save? Can I pause a campaign?
Yes, the app automatically saves campaign progress, choices made, items obtained, character status. You can pause a quest and resume it whenever you want. Narrative consequences are permanent: a betrayed or dead NPC will not return in subsequent quests.
Does it work well solo or do I need a group?
Designed for solo play: the app manages everything without the need for an additional automaton. The narrative experience is complete, but in cooperative multiplayer, discussions about choices and political dynamics emerge that enrich it. Solo play is faster (60-90 minutes) and more introspective.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English: cards, rulebook, app texts are in English. There are currently no official Italian translations. The app requires written comprehension of English for dialogues and event descriptions.
