FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
You play the best creature you have. Your opponent smiles, places a Mindbug on the table, and says thank you. Now it's theirs. This happens in four different ways inside.
What it's about
It's not an expansion. It's four entire games.
The word "expansion" is misleading here. The Mindbug: Essential Collection gathers four sets — Beyond Evolution, Beyond Eternity, Battlefruit Kingdom, and Battlefruit Galaxy — and each of the four is a complete game, which can be opened and played without owning anything else. You don't need the Mindbug base box. You don't need anything. Open, shuffle, duel.
The core remains the one designed by Richard Garfield: you summon hybrid creatures, attack, reduce your opponent to zero life points. But every time you play a card, your opponent can spend one of their two Mindbugs and take it. No mana, no economy, no collection to chase: just the moment you decide to play your best piece, and the face of the person across from you.
What changes, set after set, is what the creatures can do: they evolve in three stages, strike back from the graveyard, sprout, explode with alien energy. And since all sets are compatible with each other, over 250 cards become much more than four games — they are four games plus all the combinations you decide to try.
What they say abroad

Four boxes bought one at a time cost much more — and those who enter here don't have to choose where to start. Start with all of them.

Mindbug: Essential Collection
What's inside
Four boxes, four different ways to ruin the evening for the person across from you
Each set brings its own mechanic. They are not color variants: they change what you can do on your turn.
Beyond Evolution
Introduces the Evolve effect: certain creatures follow a three-stage evolutionary line, changing abilities at each step. It also adds a new turn option, the Action. This means that a weak card played early — one that the opponent wouldn't waste a Mindbug to steal — can become the monster that closes out the game.
Beyond Eternity
Introduces Boost: you use cards from the graveyard to give +1 power to your creatures, and some cards have effects while they are in the discard pile. It flips a basic instinct of the game: here, sometimes, losing a creature benefits you.
Battlefruit Kingdom
You plant fruit-creatures, protect them, and harvest their abilities at the right moment. The set adds Octonite tokens and a new tension: your best cards need time, and time is exactly what your opponent doesn't want to give you.
Battlefruit Galaxy
Sci-fi fruits that activate Octonite energy to unleash overpowered abilities in a galactic brawl. It's the most explosive of the four sets: the one you pull out when you want a short, nasty game.
Twenty minutes a game. Nobody gets up after the first. It's always "one last one, then we stop".
📦
Contents4 standalone sets · over 250 cards
Each Battlefruit set contains 48 creature cards, 4 Mindbug cards, 2 summary cards, 2 life counters, and 12 Octonite tokens. The complete breakdown of Beyond sets is not published item by item: we prefer not to estimate it.
🃏
Recommended SleevesStandard Mindbug size
All Mindbug cards use the same format. The exact count for this package is not declared: if you want to sleeve everything, calculate at least 260 sleeves.
📦 Why this boxSix reasons to start here ▼
What you get
Four games, not four extra card packs
The difference between an expansion and a standalone set is right here: these open and play immediately, with nothing else needed.
No base game needed
All four sets are playable on their own. If you've never owned Mindbug before, this is a complete entry point; if you already have it, these are four new boxes that fit with what you own. Neither case is a waste.
Four mechanics, not four palettes
Evolve, Boost, Harvest, Octonite energy. These are not just repainted cards: what you can do on your turn changes, and so does the calculation of when it's safe to play your big card—which is the heart of the whole game.
They mix and match
Each set is compatible with the others and with any other Mindbug box. When the four decks start to become predictable, combine two of them and everything starts over. The number of different games you've bought is not four.
Over 250 cards in one box
Buying the four sets separately costs more and takes up four shelf spots. Here they are together, kept separate if you want them separate, ready to mix if you want them mixed.
Zero economy, zero ramp
No mana to accumulate, no setup turns. The first card is played on the first turn, and the tension starts there. Those coming from competitive card games will find the same depth without three hours of mental setup.
No one wins because they spent more
You draw from the same shared deck: your cards and theirs come from the same pile. The winner is whoever reads the moment best, not whoever has the biggest collection. That's why losing a game hurts more here than elsewhere.
🎲 How to playThe rules in four moves ▼
How to play
The flow of each turn
The engine is identical in all four sets. You learn it once and it applies to the whole box.
On your turn, choose: summon a creature from your hand or send those you already have on the field to attack. No cost to pay, no resources to accumulate. With the Beyond sets, a third option is added: activate a creature's Action.
As soon as you play a creature, the other player can spend one of their two Mindbugs and take control of it: it enters the field on their side as if they had summoned it. They only have two per game. Every time they burn one, you breathe a sigh of relief.
The attacker chooses targets, the defender decides whether to block or take the damage. Creatures deal simultaneous damage. This is where the set's mechanics come into play: evolving to a new stage, boosting from the graveyard, harvesting ripe fruit, discharging Octonite energy.
Destroyed creatures go to the discard pile—which in Beyond Eternity is by no means a permanent graveyard. Unblocked damage reduces the opponent's life points. Play continues until one player reaches zero.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choosing which box to open
Four sets on the table, only one is played. Those who want monsters take Beyond Evolution, those who want laughs take the fruits. Cards in hand, two Mindbugs each, no setup. Ninety seconds have passed and you're already playing.
The first bluff
You play a mediocre creature just to see if they bite. They don't: they keep their Mindbugs. Then something big comes out from the other side, you spend your first one, and the creature changes owner right before the eyes of the one who summoned it. The first scowl of the evening.
The set's mechanic ignites
A card that seemed like discard evolves into its second stage. Or a dead creature becomes useful from the graveyard. Or a fruit ripens. You realize this set doesn't play like the other one — and that you had messed up the first three turns.
Mindbugs depleted
One of the two has spent both. From this moment on, the other can play anything without fear and they know it. The one who is exposed looks at their hand and realizes that the best cards are now worth less than before. The momentum has shifted silently.
Zero life points — and the rematch
An unblocked attack, life points at zero, game over. No one puts the cards away: you grab the second box and start over. That's the advantage of having four games on the table instead of one.
🐸 What to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends ▼
What to know beforehand
Three things we'll tell you anyway
The cards have text, and it's in English
Each creature has its ability written on it. The first few games often stop to read and understand. Basic English is needed or someone at the table to translate; then the cards are memorized and the pace becomes just right.
There is no deck-building
You don't build anything: you draw from a shared deck. This is why the game is fair, and it's also why it's not enough for some. If you're looking for the satisfaction of assembling your own deck, you won't find it here—variety comes from changing or mixing sets.
Easy to learn, hard to play well
The rules take five minutes, but you'll lose badly your first few games against someone who knows the cards. Knowing what can come out of the deck is half the game. It's frustrating for two evenings and then it becomes the best thing about the game.
🏆 Victory and defeatWhat decides the duel ▼
How it ends
Only one goal: bring them to zero
No score to calculate, no final tally. You win when the other player has no life points left.
Victory
- Reduce your opponent's life points to zero with attacks or abilities
- Steal the game-deciding creature at the right moment
- Force the other player to burn both Mindbugs on secondary targets
Defeat
- Your life points reach zero
- You played your best piece too early and gave it away
- You spent your Mindbugs on weak creatures and are now playing defense empty-handed
The Mindbug: Essential Collection puts four different ways to lose due to a wrong play on the third turn into one box. Twenty minutes per game, and you never play just one.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Mindbug: Essential Collection
Do I need the Mindbug base game to play this?
No. All four included sets—Beyond Evolution, Beyond Eternity, Battlefruit Kingdom, and Battlefruit Galaxy—are playable on their own, each with their own Mindbug cards and life trackers. If you've never owned Mindbug: First Contact, you can safely start here.
Why can't I find it on BoardGameGeek?
Because it's not a game; it's a package that collects four. BGG catalogs individual sets—search for "Mindbug: Beyond Evolution," "Beyond Eternity," "Battlefruit Kingdom," and "Battlefruit Galaxy" to find entries, ratings, and discussions for each. The ratings you read there apply exactly to the content of this box.
Can I mix the four sets?
Yes, and that's half the fun. Each set is compatible with the others and with any other Mindbug box. You can keep them separate for clean, predictable games, or combine two to create situations neither expects. The variety grows exponentially, not linearly.
What is the difference between the four sets?
Beyond Evolution adds the Evolve effect: some creatures go through a three-stage evolutionary line, changing abilities. Beyond Eternity adds Boost: you use cards from the discard pile to give +1 power, and some cards have an effect directly from the graveyard. Battlefruit Kingdom brings fruit creatures to protect and "harvest" with Octonite tokens. Battlefruit Galaxy uses Octonite energy on sci-fi fruits for more explosive abilities.
Which set should I start with?
One of the two Battlefruit sets if there's someone at the table who has never played: the creatures are more immediate and the atmosphere is lighter. Beyond Evolution if you want to immediately understand why everyone loves Mindbug — the evolution mechanic is the most satisfying of the four.
How many players can play?
Two. Mindbug is designed as a one-on-one duel, and each included set is for two players, with games lasting 15-25 minutes. Additional Nerdlab materials exist for four-player modes, but these are separate products from this box.
How does Mindbug work?
Each player has two. When your opponent summons a creature, you can spend one to immediately take control of it: it enters play on your side as if you had played it. There are only two for the entire game, so each use is a gamble — and every card you play is a test of how much the other player is willing to spend.
How long does a game really last?
15-25 minutes when you know the cards. The first few can take up to half an hour because you stop to read the abilities. The real problem is that you never play just one: expect at least an hour of rematches.
What age is it suitable for?
The publisher indicates 8+, but it depends on reading ability: the cards have English text and some interactions between abilities are subtle. A ten-year-old accustomed to card games will understand it; an eight-year-old will need an adult to read with them.
How much luck is involved?
Little, for a card game. Both players draw from the same shared deck, so no one can have a structurally better hand. Chance determines the order of appearance, everything else is timing and reading your opponent.
What sleeves do I need?
All Mindbug cards use the 63×88 mm (poker size) format, so standard sleeves like Gamegenic, Ultra Pro, or FFG are sufficient. The exact card count for this package is not declared by the publisher beyond "more than 250": if you want to sleeve everything, calculate at least 260 pieces.
Is it in Italian?
No, this is the English edition. Abilities are written on the cards and must be read to play, so a basic knowledge of English or someone at the table to translate is required. The rules themselves are very simple: the barrier is the creature text, not the rulebook.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
Mindbug: Essential Collection is a box set that collects four standalone card games from the Mindbug series — Beyond Evolution, Beyond Eternity, Battlefruit Kingdom, and Battlefruit Galaxy — for a total of over 250 cards. Each set is a competitive 2-player duel, lasting 15-25 minutes, recommended for ages 8+, and can be played alone or mixed with other Mindbug sets. Co-designed by Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering, and published by Nerdlab Games. The system eliminates economy, mana, and deck-building: both players draw from a shared deck of hybrid creatures, and any summoned card can be instantly stolen by the opponent with one of the two Mindbug cards. Beyond Evolution introduces the three-stage Evolve effect, Beyond Eternity the Boost mechanic from the graveyard, and the two Battlefruit sets introduce fruit creatures and Octonite tokens. Cards are 63×88 mm. English edition. Available on FroGames.it.
