Surround a coral with fish of the same color. Flip it over. Choose which fish to host. Look at the grid and realize you can now complete three more. In a row.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A breathing puzzle: building a marine ecosystem with combos
Designed by Yeom C.W. and illustrated by Sophia Kang, Shallow Sea brings the Great Barrier Reef to the table as inspiration for a layered spatial puzzle. It's not a thematic game — it's an abstract game dressed in nature, where every coral and every fish are pieces of a dense and interconnected combinatorial system.
You place fish and coral tiles on a personal grid. When fish surround a coral of the same color, you flip the coral and choose which fish to host inside it. But here's the twist: already placed fish can activate, deactivate, and even move, triggering chain combos if you've cleverly built your grid. Each turn is a three-dimensional micro-puzzle: you don't stack, you orchestrate.
What they say abroad
"In Shallow Sea, a multi-layered puzzle board game inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, players create their own vivid ocean landscapes by strategically arranging an array of marine life, colorful fish, and corals."
— Bad Comet
Shallow Sea is a young game and promises to stand out in the landscape of abstract puzzles for its mechanical fluidity.

Shallow Sea
The solo mode uses the same rules as multiplayer without an automa: you draft tiles and build your grid aiming for the highest possible score. The experience is complete, and the game is designed to work very well even alone, only losing the competitive micro-drafting of multiplayer.
Elements of the Ecosystem
What makes up your coral reef
Fish Tiles
Each tile shows one or more colorful fish. You place them on the grid: when they surround a coral of the same color, that coral is completed, and you can choose which fish to host inside it.
Coral Tiles
Corals of five colors. Once surrounded by the right fish, they flip over and become homes for the fish. Completing multiple corals in one move allows you to make devastating combos.
Shells
Tactical resource you use to attract fish and move them on the grid. Used at the right moment, they trigger chain combos by completing multiple corals simultaneously.
Ecosystem Cards
Variable objectives that determine how you score: spatial patterns, sets of marine creatures, specific configurations. They change every game and guide your constructive strategy.

How to play
The flow of each round
A round is a micro-puzzle: draft tiles, place them, resolve activations, prepare for the next move.
Choose fish, coral, or sea creature tiles from the common pool (open drafting). What you take determines what you can build now and what you block for others.
Place the tiles on your personal grid, following the placement rules. Each tile can activate, deactivate, or move existing elements: plan the consequences.
If fish completely surround a coral of the same color, flip the coral and choose which fish to host. This choice influences future combos and ecosystem points.
Spend shells to attract fish and move them on the grid. Use them to trigger chain combos: completing multiple corals in one move is the heart of advanced strategy.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Setup and first tiles
You draw ecosystem cards that will determine how you score. You look at the empty grid and realize every corner counts. You place the first fish tiles, trying to balance colors, knowing that soon you'll have to start surrounding corals. It's all potential.
First corals completed
You complete your first coral: surrounded by blue fish, you flip it and choose which fish to host. The choice seems small but it opens or closes entire areas of the grid. Someone at the table completes two corals in a row and you realize shells make a difference.
Critical space management
The grid fills up. Every placement now has multiple consequences: you block spaces, create adjacencies, prepare for future combos. You use a shell to move a fish and trigger a second coral that you wouldn't have completed otherwise. The table nods: they know what you did.
The chain combo
You place a tile that completes a coral. You flip it. You choose the fish. This activates a second adjacent coral, which activates a third. In one move, you've completed three corals and the grid has transformed. Someone says 'But how...?' and you explain the sequence. This is Shallow Sea at its best.
Final scoring
Last round. You count the points from the ecosystem cards: completed patterns, collected sea creatures, special configurations. The winner is whoever built the most balanced reef and whoever knew how to read the objectives from the start. Everyone's final grid is different: some went for verticality, some symmetry, some controlled chaos.

What to know beforehand
Three things to know
The theme is cosmetic
Shallow Sea uses the Great Barrier Reef as a visual backdrop, but underneath it's an abstract puzzle of pattern matching and spatial combos. If you're looking for simulation or thematic immersion, this isn't the right game. If you're looking for well-dressed mathematical optimization, however, it is.
Steep initial learning curve
The rules are simple but seeing combos in advance requires practice. The first time you'll complete corals one by one; by the third game, you'll start building grids that explode in chains. It's a game that rewards those who keep coming back to it.
Limited interaction in multiplayer
Drafting is the only direct interaction: you take tiles that others also need. Then everyone builds their own grid without interfering. If you're looking for direct conflict or take-that, look elsewhere. This is a competitive parallel puzzle.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the end rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
The game ends when all tiles have been placed. The player with the most points, combining ecosystem objectives and strategic construction, wins.
Victory Conditions
- Fulfill the requirements of ecosystem cards: spatial patterns, creature sets, specific coral and fish configurations
- Complete the most corals by hosting the correct fish to maximize points from sets
- Balance the grid to cover multiple objectives simultaneously: specialization pays less than versatility
Mistakes that cost points
- Placing tiles without planning adjacencies: you block critical spaces and make future combos impossible
- Wasting shells on weak tactical moves instead of saving them for decisive end-game combos
- Ignoring ecosystem objectives and building without direction: even a beautiful grid loses if it doesn't score
Shallow Sea transforms pattern building into a game of three-dimensional foresight: each tile is a step towards combos you can't yet see.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Shallow Sea
What mechanics does Shallow Sea use?
Tile placement with pattern building, open drafting, set collection, and grid coverage. The mechanical core is the dynamic activation system: fish and corals influence each other, creating cascading spatial combos. It also includes elements of puzzle optimization with variable objectives.
How well does it scale from 1 to 4 players?
Excellent solo (it's almost a pure puzzle against a score), very good with 2 (tight drafting), works well with 3-4 but downtime increases because everyone has to solve their own grid. Solo is the smoothest mode, multiplayer adds the tension of the draft but slows down the pace.
Is it suitable for people who never play puzzle games?
It depends. The rules are accessible, and the first game plays in 45 minutes, but mastering combos requires spatial vision and long-term planning. If you're new to strategic puzzles, expect a learning curve: the second and third games are very different from the first.
How important is the coral reef theme?
Zero at a mechanical level. The theme is an aesthetic framework: fish are colorful symbols, corals are tiles to flip, sea creatures are bonuses. If you expect immersion or ecological simulation, you'll be disappointed. If, however, you appreciate a well-dressed abstract game, Sophia Kang's illustrations are splendid.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The game has minimal language dependency: ecosystem cards have descriptive text of objectives, but once you understand the system, you play by looking only at the symbols. An amateur translation or an Italian reference sheet would solve 90% of the text.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
Shallow Sea is a strategic puzzle board game for 1-4 players, lasting 30-45 minutes, recommended age 14+. Designed by Yeom C.W. and published by Bad Comet, it uses tile placement, pattern building, and dynamic combo mechanics to create a multi-level spatial optimization experience. Unlike traditional puzzles where elements accumulate statically, in Shallow Sea, fish and corals activate, deactivate, and move on the grid, generating chain combos and deep strategic dilemmas. Each game presents variable ecosystem objectives that guide the construction of one's personal coral reef. Available on FroGames.it with fast shipping.
