That inn on the road would earn you double points. But if you don't close it by the end, you lose everything. You place the tile. Someone is already laughing.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
The first true evolution of Klaus-Jürgen Wrede's masterpiece
Carcassonne - Inns & Cathedrals (originally Inns & Cathedrals) is the first major expansion released in 2002, two years after the base game. Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede with illustrations by Doris Matthäus and Anne Pätzke, it brings 18 new tiles to the table with new elements: inns along roads and cathedrals within cities.
It doesn't just add variety; it changes the strategy. Inns double the points for completed roads, but if you're left with an open road at the end of the game, you score zero. Cathedrals do the same for cities. Additionally, the large meeple arrives, counting as two normal meeples in majority calculations, and a complete set of meeples for the sixth player. Carcassonne stops being just a relaxed puzzle and starts rewarding those who dare.
What they say abroad
"Inns & Cathedrals adds meaningful decisions without adding complexity."

— The Dice Tower
Still an essential first expansion twenty years later: it doubles points, doubles risk, and finally allows six players without the table seeming empty.

What it adds to the experience
The four elements that change the base game
Inns on roads
Small red buildings along the roads. Completing a road with an inn: 2 points per tile instead of 1. Leaving it open at the end of the game: zero total points. The temptation is very strong.
Cathedrals in cities
Large churches within city walls. Completing a city with a cathedral: 3 points per tile and crest instead of 2. Not closing it: zero. Same gamble, larger scale.
Large meeple
A larger meeple, one per player. In majority calculations, it counts as two normal meeples. Deciding where and when to play it is half the game.
Sixth player
Complete set of gray meeples. Carcassonne finally supports six players without adaptations. The board fills up faster, majorities become chaotic, inns even riskier.

How to play
The flow of each turn
Identical to the base game, with one exception: now each tile drawn can be worth double. Or nothing.
From the face-down stack. It can be a basic tile or a new one with an inn, cathedral, or new road and city configurations.
It must match adjacent sides (basic rule). The new tiles offer more options: longer roads, more complex cities, four-way intersections.
A regular meeple or the large meeple (if you haven't used it yet). The large meeple counts double in majorities: it can steal a city or secure a contested road.
Completed road or city: score points and retrieve meeples. If there's an inn/cathedral: double your points. Cloister: 9 points as always. End of game: open areas with inns/cathedrals score zero.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
First tiles, first doubts
You draw a tile with an inn. The road has just begun. Do you start betting big or play it safe? The others observe. Someone places the large meeple on a city with a cathedral. The game has just begun, and you already feel the tension.
The large meeple comes into play
Someone places their big meeple on your road. It now counts double: you've lost the majority. You have to decide whether to invest more meeples or abandon it. The next tile might complete everything. Or not.
The inn that won't close
You have a road with three inns. It's worth a fortune. Two tiles are missing to close it. They don't appear. The others place tiles elsewhere, you keep looking for that right curve. The deck thins out. You start counting how many are left.
The completed cathedral (or not)
Last round. Someone completes a city with a cathedral: 36 points in one go. The board erupts in applause and curses. You still have that road open. You draw. It's not the right tile. You leave it there, meeple blocked, zero points.
Final scoring and surprises
Open areas are scored. Those who bet on inns and didn't close them lose dozens of points. Those who played it safe recover positions. The ranking turns upside down twice. Someone won by three points. Laughter, curses, reshuffling.
🐸Before you know itThree honest things, from friends▼
Before you know it
Three things you need to consider
Requires the base game
This is an expansion, not standalone. You need the base Carcassonne game to play: the new tiles mix with the original deck, they don't replace anything. If you don't have the base game, start with that.
Luck weighs more heavily
In the base game, a bad draw slows you down. Here, a bad draw on a road with an inn wipes out dozens of points. The risk is higher, and those who can't handle variance will suffer losses due to random details.
With six players, it gets quite long
More players = more tiles = games lasting over an hour. Downtime increases: six turns between yours and the next, and in the meantime, the board changes. It's not a flaw, but it should be considered. With four players, it remains the best experience.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Highest score wins. But now there are more ways to score points, and more ways to lose them.
Victory conditions
- Completing roads with inns and cities with cathedrals: doubled (or tripled) points if completed before the end.
- Using the large meeple to win majorities in rich areas and retrieve key points.
- Balancing risk and safety: some big bets, some easy cloisters to avoid running out of options.
Fatal errors
- Opening too many roads with inns and not closing any of them: at the end of the game, they are worth zero, meeples wasted.
- Investing the large meeple in an area that is then stolen or never completed: it's the only one, losing it is serious.
- Ignoring the new tiles and playing as in the base game: others double their points, you fall behind by 30-40 points.
Inns & Cathedrals is the gateway to competitive Carcassonne: if the base game seems too soft, this expansion adds the bite you were looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Carcassonne - Inns & Cathedrals - Expansion 1 (Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals)
Is the base game required to play?
Yes, it's mandatory. This is an expansion: it adds 18 tiles and components for a sixth player, but it does not include the scoreboard, basic meeples, or fundamental tiles. You must have the original Carcassonne.
Is the large meeple retrieved like the others?
Yes. When the area it's placed on is completed, it returns to your supply like a normal meeple. You can reuse it. The only difference is that it counts double in majority calculations, not that it remains blocked.
What mechanics does Carcassonne - Inns & Cathedrals use?
Tile placement and area majority. The large meeple adds a layer of implicit hand management: deciding when to play it is a one-time resource, like a special action.
Is it compatible with other Carcassonne expansions?
Yes, all major expansions are compatible with each other. You can mix Inns & Cathedrals with Traders & Builders, The Princess & the Dragon, etc. The rules are cumulative. Just be careful with the number of tiles: too many expansions together make the game much longer.
Is this edition in Italian?
Yes. The Giochi Uniti edition includes an Italian rulebook and all necessary components (tiles, large meeple, sixth player set, scoring markers). The tiles are language-independent (no text), like in the base game.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
