You've just built the dam. They are about to close the canal. You need to irrigate the fields before they do. Someone curses, someone redraws the entire plan, someone realizes they made a mistake three turns ago.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The Nile shows no mercy. Neither do the other players.
The Nile Affair is the map expansion for Barrage by Simone Luciani and Tommaso Battista, illustrated by Roberto Grasso. Released in 2022, it brings Barrage's hydroelectric system from the Italian Alps to the world's longest river: the Egyptian Nile. The map introduces a completely new mechanic: irrigation. It's no longer enough to build dams, turbines, and conduits: now you must also get water to cultivated fields to unlock advantages, contracts, and victory points.
At the table, the flow remains that of Barrage: you place engineers, build structures, generate power, complete contracts. But the Nile changes priorities. Water doesn't just flow towards the turbines: it also flows into irrigation canals running parallel to the river. Whoever irrigates first unlocks permanent bonuses. Those who arrive late find the field already occupied and must redraw their entire strategy. The result is an even tighter, more cutthroat Barrage, even more dependent on perfect timing.
What they say abroad
"The Nile Affair is a new thematic map for 2-4 players with new mechanics (Irrigation)."
— Cranio Creations
The Nile Affair adds strategic complexity without overcomplicating the rules. Irrigation is a perfect layer.

What's in the box
Components and novelties
Nile map
Double-sided board with the Egyptian river: longer, fewer mountains, lateral irrigation canals. Completely changes water flow management compared to the Alps.
Irrigated fields
Spaces on the board that activate only if you bring water. Whoever irrigates first gets permanent bonuses: resources, points, extra actions. Those who arrive late find it occupied.
Nile Contracts
New set of objectives linked to the Egyptian map: some require irrigation, others specific power generation, others constructions on particular spaces.
Irrigation tokens
Tokens that track who irrigated which field. Key component for the new mechanic: they must be placed at the right time or you lose the opportunity.

How to play
The flow of each round
Barrage base + irrigation layer. Five phases per round, twelve engineers to place with surgical precision.
In turn, you place an engineer on an action space. Build dams, conduits, turbines. Or take contracts, resources, special actions. Each space costs more if someone has already been there. Turn order is everything.
Water flows from top to bottom following the river and conduits. If you have built an irrigation canal and water passes through it, you activate the irrigated field: you get the permanent bonus. If someone has blocked your flow, no water, no irrigation.
Turbines connected to full reservoirs produce energy. You convert energy into victory points through contracts or the energy market. The more turbines you have, the more you produce, but you must have them powered: without water they are useless.
You complete contracts that require combinations of production, constructions or irrigation. Some Nile contracts are worth 15-20 points but demand very difficult conditions: irrigating three specific fields or producing energy in precise slots on the board.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Setup and first moves
You choose your corporation board, look at the map, calculate where the first player wants to go. You want to irrigate the field in the upper left, but you don't have the conduits yet. You place the engineer on the basic construction and hope.
The race for fields
First irrigated field. Someone completed the conduit, let the water flow, took the bonus. You look at your plan and realize you need to change priorities: you'll never get that field. You redraw your strategy for contracts.
Water blockade
You're about to produce energy. He builds a dam exactly above your turbine. No water reaches it. Zero energy this turn. You have to decide: rebuild elsewhere or wait for the reservoir to empty? Time is running out.
The impossible contract
You have a contract worth 15 points. It requires irrigation on two specific fields + production of 6 energy in one turn. You can do it, but you have to place EVERYTHING perfectly in the next two rounds. Every move counts. No margin for error.
Final count
Last turn. Produce what you can, complete remaining contracts, count irrigation points. Someone wins by 3 points. Someone else realizes that if they had irrigated ONE turn earlier, they would have won. Silence. Then someone says: "Rematch?"

Base game required
This is a map expansion. Not playable alone. You need corporation boards, engineers, wheels, basic contracts and the original Barrage rulebook. The box only contains the Nile map, irrigation tokens and thematic contracts.
Steeper curve than the Alps
Barrage base is already weight 4/5. The Nile adds a layer of complexity: you have to think not only vertically (dams-turbines) but also horizontally (irrigation). First game: +30 minutes of duration, guaranteed. It's not an "easier" expansion.
Downtime with 4 players
With 4 players, downtime is heavy: you have to wait for the other three to place, calculate, irrigate, produce. Expect 20-30 minutes of waiting per round. Optimal with 2-3 players: maintains tension without excessively lengthening the game.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
After 5 rounds, points are counted. The winner is the one who has accumulated the most victory points by summing produced energy, completed contracts, irrigated fields and structural bonuses.
Victory
- Complete high-value contracts (15-20 points) that require combinations of irrigation + energy production
- Irrigate key fields before opponents and accumulate permanent bonuses that give you points every turn
- Build an efficient water network that produces constant energy and powers both turbines and irrigation canals
Defeat
- Focus only on turbines and ignore irrigation: lose 20-30 points from field bonuses and Nile contracts
- Arrive late at irrigated fields: others have already taken the best bonuses and you have no room to recover
- Build structures too slowly or misjudge timing: opponents block your flow and you produce zero energy for two turns in a row
The Nile Affair is not for everyone. But if you liked Barrage and want a map that's even tighter, the Nile is the answer. Available on FroGames.it.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ on Barrage: The Nile Affair Expansion
Do I really need the base game or can I play with just this box?
Barrage base is absolutely necessary. This box contains only the Nile map, irrigation tokens and thematic contracts. To play, you need corporation boards, engineers, wheels, machines, resources and the base game rulebook. It is not a standalone product.
Does irrigation complicate the game much? Is it harder than the base game?
Yes, complexity increases. Barrage base is already weight 4/5. The Nile adds a layer: you have to think about both vertical flow (dams-turbines) and horizontal flow (canals-fields). For the first game, expect +30 minutes of play time and some misjudgments. It's an expansion for those who have already mastered the base game.
How many players does it work best with?
Optimal for 2-3 players. With 4 players, downtime becomes heavy: you have to wait for three people to place engineers, calculate flows, irrigate fields. Expect 20-30 minutes of waiting per round. With 2, it's very tight and fast, with 3 it remains manageable.
Can I mix the Nile map with other Barrage expansions?
Yes, you can combine The Nile Affair with the Executive Officer boards (5th player expansion) and with the Leeghwater Project maps. Each map is compatible with all modular Barrage expansions. Read the setup rules carefully for adaptations.
What mechanics does Barrage: The Nile Affair use?
Worker placement with variable cost (more expensive if occupied), network building (build connected dams, conduits, turbines), resource flow management (water physically flows on the board), contracts (objectives to complete for points), asymmetrical powers (each corporation has unique abilities), irrigation mechanic (new: flow water into fields for permanent bonuses). Variable setup and turn order based on statistics (who produced less energy goes first).
Is this edition in Italian?
Yes. The Cranio Creations edition includes the map, rulebook, and contracts entirely in Italian. Compatible with any edition of Barrage base (the game uses very little language-dependent text).
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
Barrage: The Nile Affair Expansion is a map expansion for 2-4 players designed by Simone Luciani and Tommaso Battista, published by Cranio Creations in 2022. It introduces the irrigation mechanic: in addition to building dams and turbines to produce energy, you must channel water through side canals to activate cultivated fields and unlock permanent bonuses. The Nile board replaces the Alps map from the base game and radically changes water flow management: a longer river, fewer mountains, horizontal as well as vertical competition. Duration 60-120 minutes, recommended age 14+, weight 4.1/5. Requires the Barrage base game to play. Available on FroGames.it.
