Green rebirth in the ruins of Scotland
Reiner Knizia returns to tile placement with a game set in post-calamity Scotland, where clans rebuild castles and territories in harmony with nature. Illustrated by Anna Przybylska and Vesna Redesiuk, Rebirth carries Knizia's elegant signature into an evocative and hopeful world designed by Mighty Boards.
Each turn you draw a hexagonal tile from your reserve and place it on the map. It represents your clan's contribution to the rebirth: farmlands, forests, villages. Area control matters, but so do the contracts you complete and the end-game bonuses. Choices become tighter as the map fills up and your opponents close off spaces.

Tiles, territories and contracts
Prestigious Castles
Castles award majority points at the end of the game. Controlling them means placing the right tiles in the right areas, before others do.
Hexagonal tiles
Each tile represents a reborn piece of Scotland: fields, forests, villages. You place them to build contiguous areas and complete your objectives.
Progressive contracts
Personal objectives that ask for specific configurations. Completing them gives points but ties you down: you must balance contracts and map control.
End-game bonuses
Secret and public objectives that reward different strategies. It's not enough to dominate: you need to know which bonuses you are chasing.

How to play
The flow of each turn
A turn in Rebirth is fast: draw, place, evaluate. The strategy lies in what you build and where you build it.
Take a hexagonal tile from your personal supply. You have limited but sufficient choice to adapt.
You place it on the hexagonal grid respecting adjacency rules. Each tile expands your control or closes off areas to opponents.
If you have completed a contract, you claim it. If you have closed an area around a castle, you mark control. You don't see the points immediately: they are counted at the end of the game.
The next player does the same. The game flows smoothly until all tiles are placed or contracts are exhausted.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The map is empty, anything is possible
You place the first tile. You have a strategy in mind: aim for a castle, close off a large agricultural area. The others do the same. For now there is room for everyone.
Contracts guide you
You draw a contract: it asks for three tiles of a specific type in a row. You start building around that goal. Someone approaches your castle. It's not a problem yet, but it will be soon.
Space is tightening
The map is half full. That area you wanted to close? Someone put a tile in the middle. You have to change your plan or sacrifice a turn to block their expansion. Choices weigh more heavily.
The castle moment
Only a few turns left. The main castle is contested between you and an opponent. You have a tile that would give you the majority, but completing that contract is worth sure points. Choose. Someone laughs, someone curses.
Count the points with a surprise
End of game. Majorities, contracts, secret bonuses. Someone had a hidden objective no one had seen. The ranking is overturned. The winner is whoever planned best, not whoever placed the most.

Elegance has a cost
Rebirth is pure Knizia: simple rules, deep decisions. But this means that in the first game you might not see all the implications. The curve is gentle but present. Those expecting a filler will be surprised by the tactical depth.
Minimum but present downtime
Turns are quick, but by the end of the game, some players start calculating majorities before placing. With 4 players, it can slow down slightly. It's not eurogame-heavy analysis paralysis, but if you play with perfectionists, be prepared for some pauses.
Honest scaling
The game works well with 2 to 4 players, but with 2 it's more predictable, with 4 more chaotic and unpredictable. If you're looking for total control, 2 players is the optimal setup. With 4, you have to accept that someone will mess up your plans.

How to win
Rebirth ends when all tiles are placed or contracts are exhausted. Then points are counted.
Victory points
- Majorities on castles: whoever controls more tiles around a castle earns the associated points
- Completed contracts: each claimed contract is worth fixed or variable points
- End-game bonuses: public and secret objectives that reward specific configurations (larger areas, tile diversity, patterns)
How to lose
- You don't complete contracts: you have them but can't build the required configurations
- You lose majorities: opponents shut you out of key castles
- You ignore bonuses: you focus only on one strategy and miss easy points from other sources
The winner is the one who balances territory control, contracts, and hidden bonuses. It's not enough to dominate the map: you need to know where it really matters.

🐸 HOW TO PLAY
1. Each player has a personal supply of tiles representing elements such as food, energy, and settlements. Each turn, they place a tile on an open space on the board, trying to create advantageous combinations.
2. Tiles placed adjacent to each other form groups that generate points: farms (food or energy) give increasing points for each tile added; completed settlements reward the player with the most houses; castles are controlled by having the most adjacent tiles and are worth 5 points at the end of the game.
3. Placing tiles near cathedrals allows you to place a cathedral and obtain a secret mission card, which provides bonus points at the end of the game if fulfilled.
4. The board is double-sided: the Scotland side is ideal for starting out, while the Ireland side introduces public objectives and bonus towers, increasing competition and strategic variety.
5. The game ends when all players have placed all their tiles. The points earned during the game, including those from controlled castles, incomplete settlements, and completed missions, are added together. The player with the highest score wins.
