The FroGames Card
You just built a perfect eight-tile city. Your opponent places a castle on it, waits for you to complete the adjacent road, and collects everything. You smile. You were already thinking about the bridge.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Three ways to make Carcassonne nastier
Klaus-Jürgen Wrede published this eighth expansion for Carcassonne in 2010, with illustrations by Doris Matthäus, Anne Pätzke, and Chris Quilliams. The original title is Bridges, Castles & Bazaars, in Italian Bazar, Ponti e Castelli. It is not a thematic expansion: it is a package of three micro-modules that alter the basic rules in different directions, all optional and combinable as desired.
Bridges allow you to continue a road over a field, bypassing obstacles. You save incomplete roads, jump over obstacles, and build impossible paths. Castles are tokens you place on small cities: when someone completes an adjacent construction, you collect the same points. Pure speculation. Bazaars are special tiles that trigger auctions: the winner chooses first from the pile of drawn tiles, the others take what's left. Three simple systems that open up dirty, speculative, opportunistic lines of play.
What they say abroad
"Bridges, Castles and Bazaars adds strategic depth without overwhelming new players."

— The Opinionated Gamers
The perfect expansion for those who find basic Carcassonne too polite: it gives you the tools to make life difficult for others, and they will do the same to you.

Carcassonne Bazaar Bridges and Castles - Expansion No. 8 (Carcassonne: Expansion 8 – Bridges, Castles and Bazaars)
What you find in the box
The three modules of the expansion
Bridges
12 wooden bridge tokens. You place them instead of a tile to continue a road over a field. You save incomplete roads, bypass obstacles, build impossible paths.
Castles
12 castle tokens. You place them on small two-tile cities: when someone completes an adjacent construction, you collect the same points. Pure speculation.
Bazaar Tiles
6 bazaar tiles that trigger auctions. When you draw one, other tiles are revealed and players bid in points. The winner chooses first, the others take what's left.
Rulebook
Three pages. Each module has its own rules, all optional. You can play with just one, two, or all three simultaneously.

How to play
The flow of each turn
The basic Carcassonne turn remains the same. The modules add options at specific points.
As always. If you draw a bazaar tile, an auction is triggered: reveal more tiles, players bid points, and the winner chooses first. Otherwise, proceed as normal.
You can place the drawn tile according to standard rules, or discard it and place a bridge in its place to continue a road over a field.
You can place a meeple on the newly placed tile, or, if you have completed a two-tile city, place a castle token on it instead of a meeple.
If you complete a feature, you score points. If there is an adjacent castle, the castle owner also scores the same points. End of turn, pass to the next player.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Clean setup
Choose which modules to use. For the first game, maybe just bridges, or just castles. Distribute the tokens, set aside bazaar tiles if you're using them. The game starts like a normal Carcassonne game, but everyone knows new rules are about to change something.
The first bridge
Someone draws an awkward tile, it doesn't close their road, and instead of discarding it, they place a bridge. The road continues over the field. The others look at the board and realize that the geometry has changed: roads are no longer imprisoned by other people's fields.
The opportunistic castle
You build a small two-tile city, put a castle on it, and wait. Your opponent completes a seven-tile road right next to your castle. You score seven points without doing anything. They look at you, you smile. They've just understood how castles work.
The auction that turns the tables
A bazaar tile comes out. Four tiles are revealed from the pile. One is perfect for closing the twelve-point city you've been building for five turns. You bid eight points, someone else bids ten. They win, take the perfect tile, you get a useless tile and have lost ten points. The bazaar is mean.
Final scoring
It's time to count. Bridges saved two roads that would otherwise have remained open. Castles generated unexpected mid-game points. Auctions redistributed resources and created tense moments. Basic Carcassonne would have ended the same, but this game was dirtier, more strategic, more fun.
🐸Good to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
Good to know beforehand
Three things you need to know
Bazaars slow things down
Auctions take time: you have to reveal tiles, make bids, resolve the choice. If you play with slow or analytical players, bazaars can lengthen the game by 10-15 minutes. Consider excluding them if you want a quick game.
Castles create kingmaking
If a player is far behind, they can place castles next to the leader's projects and score free points, catching up effortlessly. In competitive games, this can be disruptive: the castle is a powerful tool, and someone who misuses it can unintentionally upset the balance.
It's not a thematic expansion
It doesn't add new biomes, characters, or narratives. It's a mechanical variant pack. If you're looking for new landscapes or tiles with unseen illustrations, look at other expansions (Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders). This is for those who want more strategic options.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
The game ends when the tiles run out. You count the points accumulated during the game plus the points from incomplete features at the end of the game. The player with the most points wins.
Winning strategies
- Use castles to score from other players' large projects without investing meeples
- In auctions, only bid for tiles that close high-scoring features: losing points for a useless tile is devastating
- Bridges save you when you draw poorly: use them to complete roads that would otherwise remain open and score no points
Common mistakes
- Placing castles randomly: if no one completes nearby features, the castle is useless
- Bidding too much in auctions: losing ten points for an eight-point tile is suicide
- Wasting bridges too early: you only have 12 in the whole game, use them when they are truly needed
This is the expansion that makes Carcassonne more strategic without overcomplicating it. Three simple modules, three new gameplay lines, zero bloat.

FAQ about Carcassonne Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars - Expansion No. 8 (Carcassonne: Expansion 8 – Bridges, Castles and Bazaars)
Can I play with only one of the three modules?
Yes, they are all optional and independent. You can use only bridges, only castles, only bazaars, or any combination. The rulebook recommends introducing them one at a time for the first few games.
Can bridges connect two separate roads?
No. A bridge continues an existing road by spanning over a field, but it cannot connect two different roads. It only serves to continue a road that would otherwise be blocked by a field.
What if I win an auction but don't want any of the revealed tiles?
Too bad, you bid points for nothing. The auction winner MUST choose a tile from those revealed. That's why you need to carefully consider if it's worth bidding: if none of the tiles truly benefit you, let others win.
What mechanics does Carcassonne Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars use?
Tile placement, area majority (territory control with meeples), auction/bidding (auctions in bazaars). Bridges add a mechanic for overriding placement rules, castles introduce the concept of speculating on other players' projects.
Is the expansion available in Italian?
Yes, the Giochi Uniti edition includes rules and components in Italian. The bridge and castle tokens are wooden without text, and bazaar tiles have universal icons. The Carcassonne base game is required to play.
