Read the paragraph aloud. Choose whether to face the political, religious, or strength challenge. Someone finds an artifact. Someone else unlocks a hidden component that no one knew existed. And Greece changes shape before your eyes.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A hero's journey in ancient Greece, where every choice writes your legend
Tales of Myth & Legend is a paragraph book game by Michael Guigliano, Keith Ward, and Bobby West, published by Van Ryder Games with illustrations by Miguel Coimbra. Set in an ancient Greece where myth and history intertwine, the game puts you in the shoes of an emerging hero or heroine seeking power and glory in an era dominated by Alexander the Great.
Each round you choose how far to travel on the map, visit cities and mythological locations, and face encounters that branch based on your decisions. The game includes unlockable components that only emerge as a result of specific events, thousands of different paragraphs, and narrative paths that make every game unique. Compete against other players and Alexander himself to unify Greece.
What they say abroad
"1-4 players will each take a hero's journey, competing against each other and Alexander the Great"
1 to 4 players each embark on a hero's journey, competing against each other and Alexander the Great
— Van Ryder Games
It's a game that promises thousands of different stories and components that unlock along the way. The card will be updated when the game is in the hands of players and we have gathered the first real feedback. For now, the setting and mechanics intrigue us a lot.

Tales of Myth & Legend
The game officially supports solo play against Alexander the Great as an opponent. The narrative experience remains complete, but you lose the competition with other human heroes for the dominance of Greece.
The tools of your journey
What you'll find in the box
Paragraph book
The narrative heart of the game. Thousands of encounters that branch based on your choices: political, religious, and strength challenges. Each paragraph takes you deeper into mythological Greece.
Map of ancient Greece
Cities and mythological places to visit. The board determines where you can go and what encounters to face. Different distances change the turn order: those who travel less, act first.
Movement cards and dice
Each round you simultaneously choose how far to travel. Dice influence the outcomes of challenges. Luck can help or betray you, but the choices remain yours.
Unlockable components
Hidden elements that emerge only as a result of specific events. No one knows what's there until something happens at the table. Every game can reveal new surprises.

The flow of each round
Each round follows a simple structure: choose, move, encounter, decide.
Everyone simultaneously chooses how far to travel. Those who choose short distances will go first in the turn, those who choose long distances will go last. Timing matters.
Based on the movement cards, the turn order is determined. Those who have traveled the least act first. Then proceed one by one.
On your turn, you visit a city or a mythological place on the map. Choose what type of encounter to face from those available: political, religious, or strength-based. Read the corresponding paragraph aloud.
The paragraph presents you with a situation and choices. Decide how to react. Roll the dice if required. Your decisions influence your score, unlock events, and can reveal hidden components. Then it's the next player's turn.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The hero departs
Choose your character, read their background. Others do the same. Someone wants to be a warrior, someone else a cunning politician. The map of Greece is before you, Alexander the Great advances in the background. Someone cracks a joke about history, someone else is already engrossed.
The first encounter
Play movement cards simultaneously. Whoever traveled the least goes first. You visit a city, choose what kind of challenge to face. Read the paragraph aloud. Do they offer you an alliance or challenge you to a duel? You roll the dice, choose how to proceed. Greece begins to take shape.
Hidden components
Someone unlocks a component that no one knew existed. Everyone stops. An envelope is opened, something is added to the board. The game changes shape before your eyes. No one had predicted this. The table erupts in speculation.
The race for dominance
Mid-game, the competition gets serious. Alexander advances, you are building your power. Someone has found a mythical artifact, someone else has failed a religious test and is paying the consequences. Every past choice matters. Turn order becomes tactical.
Who unifies Greece
End of game. Someone has achieved glory, someone else has been surpassed by Alexander. The final paragraphs are read, the outcomes are revealed. Each hero has a different story to tell. Someone wants to replay immediately to see what would have happened if they had chosen differently.

Three things to keep in mind
Games can last from 60 to 150 minutes depending on how many players you are and what narrative paths you take. If you are looking for a quick filler, this is not the right game.
Most of the experience comes from reading the paragraphs. If no one at the table enjoys reading or listening to narrative texts, immersion drops drastically. It's a gamebook, not an eurogame with flavor text.
Thousands of paragraphs mean many different stories, but after several games you will start to see some encounters again. Replayability is high, but don't expect every game to be completely new forever.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The winner is the one who accumulates the most power and glory, unifying Greece before Alexander the Great.
Victory
- You accumulate enough power points through successful encounters and winning choices
- You achieve your hero's specific victory conditions before others
- You surpass Alexander the Great in the race to dominate Greece
Defeat
- Alexander the Great unifies Greece before you achieve your goals
- Other players surpass you in the race for power
- You fail crucial tests that exclude you from the final competition
It's a game that promises thousands of different stories, unlockable components, and a mythological setting curated by Miguel Coimbra. We don't yet know if it will deliver on all its promises, but the idea of competing against Alexander the Great has already won us over.
