You enter a shop, ask the bread dragon for a favor. You gather ingredients, go back to the blacksmith, cast a spell. Three dragons watch you. By the end of the evening, you've built a city that smells of everyday magic.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
Shops, artisan dragons, and a city to enchant
Designed by Manny Vega and illustrated by Sandara Tang, Flamecraft puts you in the shoes of a Flamekeeper: one who can speak with artisan dragons, those smaller, more talented versions of their destructive cousins. Published in 2022 by Cardboard Alchemy after a record-breaking Kickstarter, the game has topped the charts for its dreamy artwork and a mix of accessible yet never trivial mechanics.
You visit shops, place dragons in the workshops where they specialize (bread, meat, iron, crystal, plants, potions), gather resources and favors. Then you cast spells to power up the shops: each spell gives you reputation points and activates all the dragons present in that shop. If you attract fancy dragons (the rare ones), you'll unlock even stronger bonuses. The game ends when someone runs out of spells or fancy dragons: whoever has the most reputation wins.
What they say abroad
"A cozy engine builder where every dragon feels like a tiny friend you want to protect."
A cozy engine builder where every dragon feels like a tiny friend you want to protect.
— Meeple Mountain
It's a game that visually cuddles you and makes you sweat over the last moves. The tension is there, but it doesn't scream: it whispers between a baker and a blacksmith dragon.

Flamecraft
Solo mode included in the base manual with objectives and a mini-campaign. The experience is complete and the pace works well, but it lacks the competitive interaction over the race for fancy dragons that makes multiplayer games tense.
Your arsenal
What you manage during the game
Artisan dragons
Each dragon has a specialization (bread, iron, crystal, potions...). Placing them in the right shop gives you favors and resources. Fancy dragons are worth extra points and unlock powerful abilities.
Shops to visit
Modular board with shops. You visit a shop, get resources and a favor from ONE dragon present. The more dragons there are, the more options you have: but it also benefits whoever enchants that shop after you.
Spells
Spend resources to cast a spell on a shop: you gain reputation points and activate all the dragons present. It's the engine of scoring and the key moment of the turn.
Multipurpose cards
Hand of cards that represent both dragons to place and spells to cast. Each card has two sides: choose how to use it based on the situation.

How to Play
The flow of each turn
Flamecraft uses a simple structure: on your turn, you take ONE main action, either visiting a shop or enchanting it. Then you draw and pass.
You can visit a shop (gain resources and a favor from a present dragon, then optionally place a dragon from your hand) OR enchant a shop (spend resources, gain reputation, activate all dragons there).
If you visited, choose which dragon grants you a favor (each type gives different resources). If you enchanted, each dragon in the shop grants you its favor: a powerful multiplier effect.
After an enchantment, you draw cards to replenish your options. Otherwise, you pass directly to the next player.
If someone has run out of enchantments or fancy dragons, the game ends at the end of the round. Otherwise, play continues.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Everyone chooses their starting shop
Modular board in the center, everyone draws their starting hand. Someone immediately goes to the bakery, someone else aims for the forge. First round of exploration: you understand which resources are circulating, where the useful dragons are. The atmosphere is curious, there's no rush yet.
First placements and first specialization choices
You start placing your dragons where you need to accumulate resources. Bread for quick enchantments, iron for heavy fancy ones. Someone realizes that you are monopolizing a resource and changes course. The tension gently rises.
The first big enchantments
Someone casts the first enchantment on a shop full of dragons. Activates four cascading abilities, accumulates resources and points. Others realize that that shop has become a point-scoring machine. The race begins.
The hunt for fancy dragons
Draw a fancy dragon: it's worth double points and has a unique ability. You place it in a strategic shop. Another player enchants that shop immediately afterward to also use the fancy dragon you just placed. Bitter laughs, intertwining strategies.
Final enchantments and reputation count
Someone runs out of enchantments or fancy dragons: game over. Points are counted: reputation from enchantments, bonuses from fancy dragons, secret objectives. The player who best optimized their last move wins by two points. Everyone wants to play again immediately with a different strategy.
🐸What to Know BeforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
What to Know Beforehand
Three things to consider
At maximum player count, turns lengthen: everyone evaluates more shops, more dragons, more combos. If the group includes slow analysts, the game can exceed 90 minutes. With 2-3 players, it remains fluid.
You draw dragons and enchantments from the deck. Sometimes the perfect dragon arrives at the perfect moment, sometimes not. You mitigate with multiple choices, but those who hate any randomness might feel frustrated.
Immediate rules, clear symbols. But understanding when to place dragons and when to enchant, which shops to develop, which specialization to follow: this requires 2-3 games. The first time you risk wasting moves.
🏆Victory and DefeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it Ends
How to Win
The game ends when a player runs out of their enchantments or the deck of fancy dragons is empty. The current round is completed, and reputation points are counted.
Victory
- Reputation points from cast enchantments (variable value per shop type)
- Points from placed fancy dragons (worth double and have bonuses)
- Completed secret objectives (personal goal cards)
How to Fall Behind
- You place dragons randomly without building a coherent resource engine
- You cast enchantments on empty shops or with few dragons (you lose efficiency)
- You ignore the race for fancy dragons: opponents accumulate double points while you fall behind
Flamecraft is strategic placement with the aesthetic of a fairy tale and the substance of a light eurogame: each game leaves you with a different city and the desire to optimize better next time.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Flamecraft
What mechanics does Flamecraft use?
Worker placement (dragon placement), hand management (multi-use card management), set collection (resources to combine for enchantments), contracts (secret objectives), modular board (variable shops). All in a medium-light weight (2.2/5).
Does it scale well from 1 to 5 players?
It scales well for 2-4 players. With 5, downtime can increase if the group is slow. The solo mode is official and works with dedicated objectives, a complete experience but without the competitive tension.
Is it suitable for those who have never played a eurogame?
Yes, it's an excellent gateway: clear rules, intuitive symbols, welcoming theme. The depth emerges after a couple of games, but the first one is already fun even if you don't optimize everything.
How much does randomness weigh?
Drawing dragons and enchantments introduces variability, but you always have multiple choices to adapt. It's not a dice game: strategy matters more than luck, but a purist of total control might feel the limitation.
Is it available in Italian?
The edition for sale is in English. The game has text on the cards (dragon names, enchantments, abilities), but the symbols help a lot: with a reference or a fan translation, you can play without problems even with basic English.
