The FroGames Review
The Spark trembles. The cargo is precious, vital rooms glow red on the display, and you have three action points to decide which disaster to mitigate. Others look at their hand of cards. No one yet knows who will go fix the engine.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Spaceship, precious cargo, pirates, and an AI that's never enough
Spark Riders 3000, designed by Louis Clerc and Quentin Deleau and published by Arkada Studio in 2024, is a cooperative tower defense game hybridized with an app. The premise: you are the crew of the Spark, the spaceship equipped with the most advanced artificial intelligence in the universe, tasked with delivering vital cargo to the four corners of the galaxy. Alien pirates and hostile environments await. The Spark is modular; each scenario changes the board and threats.
Each round you must coordinate your limited actions to defend vital rooms, repair damage, manage unexpected events generated by the app, and repel waves of enemies. The cards in your hand are your moves, dice decide outcomes, and the modular board ensures each scenario requires different tactics. You win if you reach the delivery point with critical rooms intact. You lose if a vital room is destroyed or the cargo is intercepted.
What they're saying abroad
Spark Riders 3000 promises the FTL experience on the tabletop, with all the pressure of deciding which emergency to ignore while others explode. The integrated app mode keeps the pace high and the pirates don't let you breathe.

Spark Riders 3000
Solo play is provided by the base rules: you manage multiple characters, the app generates events and enemies. The experience is complete and the tactical pressure remains intact, but you lose the cooperative negotiation (deciding everything yourself takes away the fun of arguing about which room to save).
Your arsenal
What you have to keep the spaceship going
Modular rooms
The board changes with each scenario: engine room, infirmary, armory, bridge. Each room has a vital function and resistance. If a critical room falls, the mission ends.
Action cards
Your hand is your turn. Each card gives you action points to move, repair, shoot, activate special abilities. Playing the right card at the right time is the only thing separating you from the void.
Combat dice
You roll dice to resolve repairs and conflicts. Outcomes are binary: it either works or it doesn't. Luck is part of the game, and a bad night of dice can sink even the best plan.
Companion app
The app manages events, enemy waves, and timing. It's not a passive narrator: it sets the pace, creates overlapping emergencies, and escalates the threat. Mandatory to play.

How to play
The flow of each round
Each round is a race against time: app, actions, damage, repeat.
The app generates the round's event (malfunction, enemy wave, special condition) and places threats on rooms. Read the event aloud. Decide who does what.
In turn, play action cards from your hand. Each card gives action points: spend them to move between rooms, repair damage, attack enemies, activate special abilities. You must coordinate: total action points are never enough for everything.
When repairing or attacking, roll the dice indicated by the card. Results above the threshold succeed, those below fail. Luck matters. A wrong die roll at a critical moment can cost you the game.
Unresolved enemies inflict damage to rooms. Update health tokens. If a vital room collapses, you lose. Otherwise, the app advances the mission timeline. The next round begins, more pressing than the last.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Scenario setup
Assemble the modular board according to the scenario chosen by the app. Place room tokens, deal character cards, check victory conditions. Everyone immediately understands what they need to protect. It seems manageable. It's not.
First wave
The app announces the first wave of pirates. Enemies appear in multiple rooms. You decide who goes where, play the first action cards, roll the first dice. Someone fails a repair. The first room takes damage and you realize action points are never enough.
Overlapping emergencies
The app launches a random event: fire, critical malfunction, double wave. You already have two rooms in the red and now you have to decide which one to ignore. Someone proposes a desperate plan. Someone else says it won't work. You do it anyway because there's no alternative.
The dice moment
A vital room has one health point left. An emergency repair is needed. You roll. The die comes up low. The room collapses. You all remain silent for three seconds, then someone says: 'Did we lose?' You check the defeat conditions. No, that wasn't the critical room. You breathe a sigh of relief.
Arrival at delivery
The app announces the final round. The delivery point is reached but pirates launch the final assault. You play everything you have, roll dice, pray. A vital room survives with one health point. You won. Or lost. Either way, you have a story to tell.

The app is mandatory
You cannot play without the companion app. It manages events, timing, enemies, scalability. If you dislike digital hybrids or prefer purely analog games, this is not for you. The app works well but requires a device to be always on.
Dice decide a lot
Tactics matter, but dice can sink even the perfect plan. If you have bad rolls one evening, you will lose even with excellent coordination. It's not a pure eurogame: luck is part of the experience and must be accepted.
Replayability depends on scenarios
The modular board and random events guarantee variety, but the game loop remains the same: overlapping emergencies, triage decisions, dice rolls. After 10-15 games, you might find the structure repetitive, unless expansions or new scenarios are released.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The mission is simple: deliver the cargo. But there are a thousand ways to fail.
Victory
- Reach the delivery point indicated by the scenario
- All vital rooms (indicated by the app) are still standing at the end
- The cargo is intact and has not been intercepted by pirates
Defeat
- A vital room is destroyed (health at zero) before delivery
- The cargo is intercepted by a special enemy event
- The Spark spaceship completely runs out of critical resources (according to the scenario)
Spark Riders 3000 is FTL breathing on the table. Each scenario is a different crisis, each game is a story of desperate triage and dice deciding fate. If you love tense co-ops with one foot in the digital world, it's here.

FAQ about Spark Riders 3000
What mechanics does Spark Riders 3000 use?
Cooperative game with action point allowance (managing action points from cards), dice rolling for resolutions, modular board (different board for each scenario), and events generated by the mandatory companion app. It's a cooperative tower defense: you defend rooms, repair damage, repel waves.
Is it a difficult game?
The rules are simple (10-15 minutes explanation), but the tactical challenge is high. You constantly have to decide what to ignore because action points are never enough. Dice add unpredictability: a bad evening of rolls can make you lose even with excellent tactics. Scenarios have scalable difficulty.
Does it work well with 2 players?
Yes, the app scales threats based on the number of players. With 2 players, you have fewer total action points but also fewer rooms to defend. The pressure remains high. Solo play (1 player) is official and works well, but you lose the cooperative negotiation that is part of the fun.
How long does a game last?
60-90 minutes depending on the scenario and number of players. 2-player games tend towards 60, 4-player games extend towards 90. If you lose quickly due to a vital room being destroyed, you can finish in 45 minutes and start again immediately.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. The companion app is in English, and the cards have English text. The language level is accessible (standard sci-fi terms) but requires a basic understanding of English. There are no official Italian localizations at the moment.
